Long Time Redskins Tackle Jon Jansen signs with Detroit Lions

Washington Redskins v San Francisco 49ers

This mourning (May 29th, 2009) the Washington Redskins released, 10 year vet Right Tackle Jon Jansen. Jon was a fixture for the Redskins organization, and had developed a good relationship with owner Daniel Snyder.

On Thursday the Jansen’s received a call from head coach Jim Zorn, who informed them that the coach and owner wanted to discuss his future with the team.

Jon would later go on to say that after he was done on the phone with Zorn, he knew exactly what they were going to discuss. That discussion was going to be about Jansen career ending in Washington.

Mr. Snyder sent a private plane to fly the Jansen’s to Washington as a token of appreciation. Upon arriving Jon, head Coach Zorn and team owner Snyder mutually decided to release Jon from the team.

“I’ve developed a close relationship with Jon and his family over the last 10 years and I have the upmost respect for him as a person and a player. Jon has been an important part of our organization for the past decade. We wish Jon and his family the very best.”
– Daniel Snyder, Redskins Owner

Jansen Signs with the Detroit Lions
After the meeting, Jon called his agent and told him to call up the Detroit Lions and see if they were interested in signing him. Sure enough before the Jansen’s could land back at home in Detroit, Jon’s agent called him back and said, “it is a done deal.”

As soon as Jon passes a physical he will sign a one year deal for the league veteran minimum.

Coming Back Home
Signing with the Lions made perfect sense in the end for both sides. As the Lions need every good leader they can get their hands on. The fact that Jon is a loved player in the community is also a plus.

“I’ve always wanted to come home and play for Detroit.” –Jon Jansen

Jon will now come home to the city were he grew up and played in. The former Michigan Wolverine will come back and play with former college teammates Jeff Backus and Larry Foote.

Effect of this signing for the Skins and Lions
Redskins- While it always hurts to lose a good veteran, the Skins have been grooming right tackle Stephon Heyer who is now in his third year. They also have newly signed Mike Williams to back up Heyer as a replacement.

Lions- At this point in time it is unknown exactly were Jansen will fit in as the Lions have Jeff Backus at LT and last years first round pick Gosder Cherilus at RT. But there is no doubt that even if Jansen is a backup, he will be a fixture for Detroit in many ways.

In the end adding more solid veteran lineman and leaders, is what the Lions need on this team badly. It’s nice to have young players like Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith, but you need vets like Jon if you want to win on Sunday’s.
