Fantasy Information: Cedric Benson will help your fantasy team
When Cedric Benson was drafted by the Chicago Bears, many people in fantasy football thought he would be a future top ten running back. Benson was known as a strong runner that could handle the ball 25 times a game and the Bears are known for running the football and defense.
Unfortunately for both sides, Benson had a very disappointing career in the windy city. This marriage finally ended last off-season when Benson was arrested twice for driving under the influence.
Benson signs with the Bengals
At the end of September (a month into the season) the Bengals signed Benson after they placed DeDe Dorsey on injured reserve.
This signing came a week after two grand juries in Travis County, Texas, declined to indict Benson on the charges of drunken driving and resisting arrest.
As the season wore on Benson saw an increase in carries. In the final two games of the season, Cedric proved that he belonged, posting 282 yards and a touchdown in that time.
Carson Palmer needs to stay healthy
If Carson Palmer can stay healthy, the Bengals should make some noise as an offense in 2009. Chad Ochocinco and Chris Henry are both rumored to be very focused in camp this off-season. With the addition of Laveranues Coles, defenses will have to pay attention to this teams passing game.
“Whatever we have asked Cedric to do, he’s willing to do it. When he’s on the football field he’s all business. He’s like a sponge.” – Bengals running back coach Jim Anderson
With defenses paying attention to the pass, Cedric will have the luxury of not facing many eight man fronts. This will probably be the first season Benson has had that opportunity in his pro career.
“It means a lot, but even if they weren’t going to give it to me I was going to take it from somebody.” – Cedric on being the feature back for the Bengals
When Cedric had all his success for the Texas Longhorns, he also had Vince Young there to take pressure off of him. College defenses could not just focus on the running back and Cedric took full advantage.
With a healthy Palmer, Benson will have that opportunity again and I believe you will see him start to preform at a solid level.
Fantasy Information on Cedric Benson
Look for Benson as a nice draft pick some where around your 9th pick, or lower, in your fantasy draft. He shouldn’t be a starter on your team to begin the season, but he should be a starter for many fantasy teams, by years end.
