Fantasy Information: Chris Johnson and the Smash & Dash Dream

Pittsburgh Steelers v Tennessee Titans

The Titans smash & dash their way to the top record in football

In 2008 Chris Johnson proved he could do much more on a football field then run a 4.2, 40 yard dash. By seasons end he totaled almost 1,500 total yards (1,228 rushing) and had 10 touchdowns as well.

Chris’s counter part LenDale White also had a career high season in Tennessee. His smash mouth brand of football, helped wear down defenses. White also proved to be a very valuable touchdown maker with 15 TD’s to his credit.

The Titans road their running tandems success to a league high record and waltz their way into the playoffs.

Disappointment in the Playoffs

Chris Johnson looked like a man that could not be stop in the first half of the Titans playoff contest, against the Ravens. With 11 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown, against a top run stuffing team. Chris even had a very nice 28 yard catch showing us all how electric he can be in the open field.

Unfortunately for the Titans, Johnson suffered an injury and did not play in the second half of the game. They wound up losing the contest 13-10.

Is Chris Johnson play through injuries?

My major knock on Chris is that for a player to be hurt and miss the rest of a playoff game, why was he able to be on the sidelines standing up the entire time. This is the playoffs man, if you can stand then you can play.

Watching him on the side lines only made me think of Fred Taylor in his younger days as a Jaguar. Fred was like Chris today, one of the best runners in the NFL. But there is a reason people called him, “Fragile Freddy” for years in fantasy football. That was because of injuries like this one that Chris had.

I can’t see guys like Emmitt Smith or LT ever sitting on the sideline in a game like that. Sure LT went out in the ’08 playoffs, but everyone knew he was trying to be a warrior on the field with his ailments, before he had to give up.

Chris Johnson drops the Dash and becomes the Dream

Tennessee Titans v Detroit Lions

This week Johnson announced that he is no long a part of the smash & dash duo from a year ago. Chris has now dubbed himself, “Every Coaches Dream’ or “Dream” for short.

“I have to be my own guy, I can’t be noticed as a group anymore.” – Chris “Dream” Johnson

While this nick name shows that Chris is probably a very cocky guy, I do believe it is a good thing to change the nick name. If Johnson is going to become a top five fantasy running back, he needs be his own man.

If Johnson does end up becoming the true feature runner in Tennessee, then he may have an even better year then ’08.

Fantasy football information for the Tennessee Titans running backs

Johnson may be used as the every down back for the Titans this season. But in my opinion all fantasy owners need to remember that White is still on the team. Even if LenDale does not run the ball much, he is still a big concern for goaline touchdowns.

Even with White as a threat for touchdowns, Chris is still a top ten fantasy running back.

As for LenDale’s fantasy ranking, I see him as a late round stash at this point. He will probably be a good hand cuff for fantasy owners that have Johnson on their team. Other then that White is nothing more then a runner to use for bye weeks.
