Fantasy Football Info: Michael Turner Might See Fewer Carries in 2009
Last year Michael Turner lead many fantasy football owners to fantasy championships as the Falcons made their way to the post season. Turner was a common fourth or fifth round pick in many fantasy football leagues last year and now will be one of the top picks in every fantasy draft for 2009.
High expectations come with a top fantasy football pick and this year will be no different for fantasy owners with Michael on their respective teams. Just this past week The Audible, Atlanta Journal-Constitution beat writer Orlando D. Ledbetter noted that Turner could see less than 300 carries this season.
Turner carried the ball 377 times in 2008, so to see him carry the ball fewer then 300 time could be a concern for fantasy owners this season. If Ledbetter is correct in this prediction then fantasy owners may start to question if Turner is the right runner for their team this season.
Less Carries Might Not be the Only Problem
Other fantasy football sites are also noting that Michael may also suffer from a harder schedule as his competition is harder this year.
From the schedule information above one can see that Michael (on paper anyway) does have a harder schedule then last year. While this info might be a bit concerning I still believe that Turner has other assets that will counter this problem.
Growth on Offense
Turners should will benefit from the team picking up all-pro tight end Tony Gonzalez. Tony is the key piece to this whole puzzle as he will greatly help take pressure off of Roddy White and will proved young quarterback Matt Ryan another solid target.
Beyond just providing help for the offense, Gonzalez will also be an instant player that every defense will have to respect and game plan for.
Speaking of Matt Ryan he should grow in his second season in the pros as he is truly a growing star in the league. With two star targets and good role receivers like Michael Jenkins and Harry Douglas, Ryan is primed for a solid and consistent season in 2009.
Fantasy Football Information for Michael Turner
With balance on offense I believe that the Falcons and Turner are primed for another run at the playoffs. While they do (on paper) have a harder schedule this year, they only play a top five run defense from a year ago two times.
The Eagles have lost key players on defense like Brian Dawkins and their long time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is going to miss the season in a battle against cancer.
While the Bears can have good games against the run they tend to crumble against great runners like Adrian Peterson. True the Bears did limit Turner to only 54 yards a year ago but this year Gonzalez should help.
Look for Turner as a top three pick in just about every fantasy football format in the universe. This guy is too talented and has the supporting cast to help him succeed once again for the Falcons and your fantasy football team.
