Football Info: Bears’ Greg Olsen a Top 5 Tight End in Fantasy
Expectations were high for Greg Olsen when he was selected by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. For an organization that has never had great wide receivers, Bear fans knew that this young talented tight end from Miami would need to be a star for the passing game to have success.
So far in Greg’s career he has played steady accumulating 39 receptions as a rookie and 54 receptions last season. Olsen also had a better touchdown total in 2008 as he had 5 td’s for the season.
These numbers are encouraging as he now walks into his key third season of his career with Chicago.
Olsen Receives a Gift in Jay Cutler
Cutler is just starting to walk into the prime of his career and will now do it wearing a Bears uniform. With a great young gunslinger at the helm, Olsen now stands in as a very attractive fantasy option at tight end.
Since this transaction many fantasy football websites now have Greg Olsen as a top 5 tight end for fantasy football in 2009. While Olsen has not preformed up to that level so far in his career, one has to feel that he will achieve this level from here on out.
For the Bears to make a run at the playoffs this year he is going to have to have a pro bowl like season as the team has hands down the worst receiving core in football. With Devin Hester and Earl Bennett as your receivers, one has to believe that Cutler will probably be looking to his tight ends quite a bit this season.
That is not to say that Bennett and Hester won’t have some productive days this year, but they just can’t be counted on at this point as true top targets on this team.
This flaw in the offense leaves more receptions on the table for players like Matt Forte, Desmond Clark and Olsen.
Matt Forte should have around 50 receptions again this season (had 63 last year) and Desmond Clark will be a serviceable tight end in his own right. But at the end of the day Greg Olsen is the player with all the talent to dominate in this passing game.
Fantasy Football Information on Greg Olsen
While it is easy to see why Greg Olsen could very well explode onto the fantasy scene this season for 85 reception, 1,100 and 9 touchdowns, it is hard to justify ranking this kid higher then 5th among tight end for this season.
Olsen is a very gifted player but as it stands right now he just has not accomplished what Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten and Dallas Clark have done in their great careers. But if Greg should deliver this season, then he could move as high as number one overall if the tight ends listed above have down seasons.
In the end Greg makes for a fine middle round pick at your fantasy football draft this summer. Draft him and start him every week this season.
