New York Jets RB Leon Washington is Set for More Touches in ’09
Now that Brett Favre is gone from the New York Jets, one has to wonder just how much this team will run the ball in 2009. With talents in on the ground like Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and rookie Shonn Greene, the Jets have the talent to excel at this position.
At this time of the year many coaches will come out and say that this player or that player on the team is primed for a big year. They will also tell you how great their veteran players are and that they have been great in camp.
So to hear new Jets head coach Rex Ryan say that Leon Washington needs more touches it’s not a surprise.
To be honest why shouldn’t this talented player receive more then 76 carries and 47 receptions this season, seeing that he was able to convert those touches into 8 touchdowns.
While I do believe Leon will touch the ball more this year I don’t believe it will be more then maybe 40 to 60 more touches this season (pending injury to Greene or Jones).
Three Amigos Equals Less Value for all
It is true that the Jets do have three talented runners and a stealer offensive line. But in the end if you have three guys running the rock it will hurt everyone of their values, fantasy wise.
Thomas Jones will be the main ball carrier on the team but he should lose out to many red zone touchdowns to the big, strong rookie Shonn Greene.
Sure Clemens had a few starts towards the end of the 2007 season but he really did not show very much in his time then.
With a young quarterback under center they will lean heavily on tight end Dustin Keller and their running back out of the back field. With this need to check down to a running back, I would not be surprised if Leon had 75 catches this season.
However I also believe that Washington probably will not crack 100 carries on the team this year, while he is used in the return game as well.
Fantasy Football Information for Leon Washington
In the end I’ve seen Washington being drafted very consistently in the later rounds of mock drafts on the internet. While he does have some added value in PPR leagues this season, I just don’t think he is worth anything more then a back up runner for your fantasy football team.
He is worth using in a pinch and during bye weeks as he could always go out and catch 7 balls and break a long touchdown run. If your in a league that gives credit for special teams touchdowns that is an added bonus for his value as well.
But until Shonn Greene or Thomas Jones goes down this talented runner is just not worth starting week in and week out for your fantasy football team.
