49ers vs Raiders: Glen Coffee Puts On a Show | Player Rankings
They call this game the battle of the bay as the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers face off for one game every year in the preseason. In the end it’s just a preseason game but their are some fans on both sides that would have you believe it was for real.
Most of the scoring took place in the second half of the game but I did see a couple of interesting players worth mentioning in the first half.
Rookie Glen Coffee Looks Strong
Running back Frank Gore started in this game and played a few snaps as he had only 2 carries for 7 yards on the night. After Gore’s exit of the game rookie running back Glen Coffee came in and put on a show in the first half.
Last week I watched the 49ers play the Broncos and I liked the fact that Coffee was a solid technical runner as he hit the hole good and always kept two hands on the football. By the end of that game I thought Glen would make for a good back up running back that would give Gore a breather here and there during games.
Tonight I watch a different runner as Coffee was breaking into the open field and show a very nice burst of speed, with the ability to always finish his runs always fighting for the extra yard.
This game was a different story as in the first half Glen had 16 carries for 129 yards rushing and never seemed to get tired in his time on the field. In fact I would say that he looked like a feature back in the sense that he can take to ball 8 of 10 plays and only look stronger every time he gets the football. It’s those kind of quality’s that jump out at you when you watch a running back at this level of play.
All running backs have had success in college but not a lot of them can take the ball with regularity and stay healthy and fresh throughout a football game.
Look for Glen to get a decent amount of work this season as he has made Frank Gore just a little less valuable for the 2009 draft.
JaMarcus Russell has a Decent Game
This week JaMarcus Russell lost his favorite receiver Chaz Schilens for the next 4 to 6 weeks with a foot problem that required minor surgery. I was concerned for Russell when I heard that he would be without his top man and that the Raiders would be starting two rookie receivers.
Tonight Russell had a good game as he was 7 of 11 passing for 76 yards and a nice touchdown pass. In watching JaMarcus for the past two weeks I can see he is making good strides to being a productive quarterback in this league. Hopefully he will get Chaz back in 4 weeks as opposed to 6 weeks.
If Chaz should be out for longer than 6 weeks, it is going to be very hard for Russell to have consistent play with two rookie receivers on the field.
