Chargers: Darren Sproles & LT Starting Together?
This off-season Darren Sproles and LaDainian Tomlinson are trying to convince head coach Norv Turner they should have special plays to line up together in the backfield. At this point in time coach Turner has balked at the idea because he believe they will have trouble picking up the blitzing assignments.
If the running backs can convince their head coach to add packages with the two runners on the field it should make the offense a bit more explosive for this season. It would also give defenses something more to think about when they are game planning for this team.
Right now the player that would benefit from a move like this most would be Darren Sproles as he needs to find the field more often to warrant fantasy relevance. At this point in time the only fantasy owners that should be considering Sproles are owners that have Tomlinson on their teams.
What to Expect from the Chargers running game in 2009
LaDainian Tomlinson may not be the player he was four seasons ago as he is now going to be 30 years old this season. Many fantasy football analysts have knock LT and believe he is not going to have that great of a season.
I believe Tomlinson is primed for at least one more strong season in his career and I expect him to have a much better season in 2009.
First of all he is going to be in the easiest division for running the football in all of fantasy as he will play the Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos twice this season. Not only that but one of his few tough match ups this year will come against the Redskins in week 17. Most fantasy leagues don’t even play the final week of the season, so you won’t have to worry about that game at all.
Darren Sproles did have a nice playoff game last year against the Colts but he is nothing more then a backup to LT and a return man on special teams.
Again if both Sproles and LT can convince the head coach to use them from time to time together it will help Darren’s value. For now he is best used as maybe a bye week fill in when the Chargers face a weak team.
In a scenario like that you would hope the Chargers would beat down on the bad opponent and then use Sproles in the second half of the game as mop up duty.
Fantasy Football Information for the Chargers Running Backs
Look for LT to be a top five fantasy pick again this season in your league. He may very well fall to you later then that as many are down on him for this season.
As far as Sproles goes I’ve already noted that he is a late pick backup runner at best for your fantasy football team this season. If LT should go down with another injury and finally miss a regular season game (has not missed a start since 2004) then Sproles could help your team.
