Colts Receiver Anthony Gonzalez is Ready to Start

Cincinnati Bearcats v Ohio State Buckeyes

Much has change in Indianapolis since Anthony Gonzalez was draft in the first round back in 2007 out of Ohio State. The most notable change and important for that matter is that Marvin Harrison is no longer with the Colts organization.

While it is kind of sad to know we won’t see the Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison connection again on the field, one has to believe the Colts will have success again in 2009.

St. Louis Rams v Indianapolis Colts

This success was threatened by the loss of offensive line coach Howard Mudd and offensive coordinator Tom Moore, as they both retired in May. But the team hired them back as contractors and the NFL has officially informed all teams that coordinators can do whatever they please on game day.

With this news now understood the Colts will now be able to run their offense without having to lean on Manning to do everything.

Can Anthony Gonzalez fill Harrison’s shoes?

The big question for this offense now is if third year receiver Anthony Gonzalez can succeed in the starting role?

To that question I say, the Colts had best hope this kid is ready to be a success this season. Defenses are going to focus their attention on Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark in this offense every week. This will leave Anthony in single coverage often as defensive coordinators will make Gonzalez prove he can hurt them.

If Gonzalez can’t get the job done it will make the rest of the offense suffer this season. Fantasy football owners with Manning, Wayne and Clark will be feeling a pinch in production, as the team will have a harder time moving the football in the passing game.

With all that said I don’t think this poor production will happen as I believe Anthony is ready to step up and produce for this team.

Gonzalez is clearly not the talent that future hall of fame receiver Marvin Harrison was, but he is a solid player. Look for Anthony to be a player that makes around 85 catches a year for 1, 100 and 8 touchdowns in this offense.

Indianapolis Colts v Oakland Raiders

No doubt most of the big plays down the field will still lay in the hands of pro bowl receiver Reggie Wayne as he is better suited for down the field passes.

Gonzalez will be a more of a possession type receiver on this team as the year moves along.

Fantasy Football Information on Anthony Gonzalez

Right now Anthony is going in the mid rounds of many fantasy mock drafts this summer. This is good value for a receiver with talent that will start on a Peyton Manning offense.

Look for the Colts to get Anthony off to a hot start in the first month of the season, if defenses do in fact try to shut down Wayne and Clark.

In the end Gonzalez makes for a very fine No.3 receiver for your fantasy football team in 2009.
