Tennessee Titans v Dallas Cowboys

Tonight we finally got to see the Dallas Cowboys new stadium as they played their first game on their state of the art field. The Titans continued their struggles in the running game early on as the Cowboys first team played the entire first half.

Coming Together on Offense

This offseason has been all about the word chemistry in Dallas as the Cowboys hope to head back to the playoffs in 2009. With Terrell Owens now gone this team needs to have all it’s ducks in a row to have an effective season in the passing game.

With that in mind it’s not hard to understand why the Cowboys first stringers played as long as they did as they need the work. I watched the entire first half and was satisfied with what I saw considering they were playing a very good secondary.

Tony Romo didn’t have any touchdown passes but he did lead the team down for two touchdown scores in the running game. Romo’s passing stats were solid as he was 18 of 24 passing for 192 yards.

Roy Williams had a good game against one of the leagues premier corners in Cortland Finnegan as he had 5 receptions for 36 yards. One area that Williams and Romo need to work on is having bigger plays together in the passing game as Roy longest reception went for only 11 yards.

Running Game Needs Work

Watching the Titans running game this preseason has not been a joy to watch like it was last year. In the hall of fame game Chris Johnson had one good run to end his night and LenDale White had a couple good runs on his way to the end zone. Since that time these two running backs have been shut down in the past two games.

Last week against the Buccaneers Johnson had only 7 rushing yards on 7 carries and White had 6 rushing yards on 3 carries. This week Johnson had only 3 rushing yards on 2 carries and White had 4 rushing yards on 2 carries.

No doubt the Titans running backs need more than two carries in a game to be effective but what I don’t like most is that they are consistently being hit in the back field. Will have to check if they lost some key offensive linemen or maybe some older vets just are not pulling their weight.

Hopefully they can turn this around in the next preseason game against the Browns.
