Football Information: Byron Leftwich Needs to Start for Buccaneers
To finally hear the news out of Tampa Bay that Byron Leftwich is now leading the pack of many quarterbacks, is music to my ears. I’ve been saying this entire off-season that if the Buccaneers are going anywhere this year they are going to need Byron as the quarterback.
In the Buccaneers offense Leftwich has more tools around him then he every had as a starter in Jacksonville. He’s got a true N0.1 receiver in Antonio Bryant and a good tight end in Kellen Winslow. Not only that but he also has one of the better offensive lines to protect for him in football.
That last piece is probably the most important because lets face it, Leftwich is not the most mobile guy in the world. Which is one of the reasons why the Jaguars moved him off the team in 2007 and went with David Garrard instead.
With Change come Transition
This off-season the Bucs have decided to rebuild the team from the coaching staff down the players on the field. In this change they have lost fixtures on the defense in Derrick Brooks and long time defensive coordinator Marty Kiffen as well.
With this team going through a lot of turnover, they are going to need a season to get themselves back on track. While I think they will stay competitive in a lot of games this season, I believe they will come up on the sort end of the stick in 2009.
Fantasy Football Information on Byron Leftwich
While I’m happy to hear that Leftwich is now in the talks for the starting job I still don’t think he is a good option for fantasy football. We need to see this offense look strong in pre-season games before any quarterback on this team is worth a roster spot for your team.
Look to drop all Buccaneer players down a few rounds as this team has to prove it can jell as a unit before it is going to produce will on game day.
