Giants Defense with Osi Umenyiora| Football Rankings

New York Giants v Dallas Cowboys

This past week marked the first time that New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora worked in pads since his knee injury last preseason. Osi missed the entire 2008 regular season when on August 23rd in a preseason game against the Jets he tore his acl.

At that time I dropped the Giants defense to about the 10th best defense to have in fantasy football as both Osi and Michael Strahan (retirement) would be gone from the team that year. Not only did the team not have their two best players on defense but they also never really had top corner (of years past) Sam Madison all year as he only played in 7 games and started none of them.

If you would have told me that they would miss these three men and would have the hardships of defending a super bowl title, I would have said this team was going into the gutter. Especially if you told me Plaxico Burriss would be off the team by November as he shot himself in the leg!

For this team and organization to overcome the loss of key veterans and still have a great record and make the playoffs, is a testament to the product they have.

The Good Keep Rolling

The Giants defense finished strong in just about every category as they were 9th against the run, 8th against the pass and 5th in fewest points given up per game. Now the defense will get their premiere pass rusher in Osi back for this season and it should only help them apply pressure all season long.

The team also added depth to their rotating line as they pick up interior linemen Rocky Bernard (Seahawks) and Chris Canty (Cowboys) to keep the line fresh and strong.

This depth should prove to be useful as the team can hopefully keep players like star defensive end Justin Tuck fresh for the entire year in 2009.

To me the key player we need to see grow and be a solid full time starter this year is last years first round pick safety Kenny Phillips. This young player has the talent to make this secondary maintain it’s production and possibly pick up more turnovers as the front line aply’s pressure.

Phillips should be a starter this year and he needs to show he can have consistent success throughout the season.

Fantasy Football Information for the Giants Defense

The only hole in this defense I can truly find is not on the field at all but it is the loss of their defensive coordinator Steve Spagnolo (head coach Rams). We are all going to find out just how important this coordinator was to this defense as he will no long be around to game plan and call plays.

In the end having better depth on the front line and a star in Osi back on the team should make up for the loss of this coordinator. This defense will also be helped by the fact that they get the AFC West this season to play against.

The Chargers should be a tough game but the other three offenses should have a hard time when they face a quality defense like this one.
