Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte runs for a touchdown during a preseason football game in Chicago

Last week the Giants running game was dominant against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night football. This week while their running was still good it was the Bears turn to put on a show with their first team offense in Chicago.

Forte Breaks a Long One

Matt Forte was the a model for consistency as season ago as he had the knack for producing against even the toughest of defenses in his rookie season. This year he should benefit from having a quarterback that defenses will have to respect in the passing game.

Today Forte reminded us that he is capable of having big days against those upper class defenses as he posted 9 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown against the Big Blue. The touchdown run was from a distance as Forte set up his blocks and exploded into the open field for a 39 yard touchdown run.

It was very nice to see Forte on the field and showing his explosiveness as he did have a bad hamstring injury early in June camps. Last week the Bears held him out of the game but this week Matt showed us all that he is clearly ready for the season.

Jay Cutler has Much Stronger Performance

This season I expect Jay Cutler and Matt Forte to both help one another out in terms of the defense having to give the running game and passing attack equal attention. Last week Cutler didn’t look great as he locked on to Devin Hester most of the time and threw an interception.

This week he was a different quarterback with Forte in the lineup as he was 8 of 13 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown.

While Cutler should be a better quarterback than Kyle Orton for the Bears and help this team win more games, I don’t believe he will make for a solid fantasy starting quarterback (unless your in 12 team leagues) this season. By next year he will have a full year under his belt working in this offense and should be starter worthy in 2010.

Giants Running Backs are Strong Again

This week the Giants running backs were not as good as last week but they still showed us why they will be a dominant force again in 2009. Both Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw are primed to have 1,000 rushing season in the Giants run heavy offense.

Carolina Panthers v New York Giants

Look for Jacobs to get the loins share of the touchdowns while he is healthy and on the field. If Brandon should go down for a stretch of time than you had best hope you have Bradshaw stashed away on your depth chart. If Ahmad gets an opportunity to be the starting running back he will do a lot of damage and help your fantasy football team win games.
