Lions: 2009 NFL Regular Season Schedule | Fantasy Football Rankings
Detroit Lions 2009 Regular Season Schedule
The Lions should still be the worst team in football this season but they are better than an 0-16 record. With staple players for the future like Kevin Smith and Calvin Johnson this organization is taking the right steps to get themselves out of the NFL gutter.
Below are three sections of interest that are worth paying attention to for fantasy owners coming into the season for this team. First we have listed our fantasy players which we believe are worth paying attention to this season. Next is strength of schedule against the run, pass and points against. Lastly we have a few games selected that will be key in telling how this team will preform for the 2009 season.
Strength of Schedule
vs Run 2nd Hardest Schedule
vs Pass 13th Easiest Schedule
vs Points Given Up 10th Easiest Schedule
Unfortunately for Kevin Smith he has one of the hardest schedules against the run for this season. But Smith showed us a season ago that he can get it done against tough defenses and he has good hands for the receiving game. If he can be an every down back this season it will go a long way to making this runner a good fantasy football starter.
While the entire passing game should be helped by a good passing schedule it will be Calvin Johnson and he alone that fantasy owners should pay attention too. Brandon Pettigrew could also make for a decent backup tight end in deep leagues but other than that you should probably stay away from the Lions.
Games of Interest
Weeks 8, 11, 13: If the Lions are going to finally get a win they might have to wait awhile before they get a team they can sink their teeth into. Week eight they play the Rams and that is the first team (other than the Packers week 6) in which had a losing record in 2008.
Weeks 11 and 13 the Lions face off against the Browns and Bengals and one would have to believe that these are also games that the Lions can have an opportunity to win a game or two. Beyond that it will probably be another sad season for Detroit fans as this team is in another rebuilding phase.
2009 Football Projection
Our radio show on blog talk radio is call “wait till next year” and that is exactly what the Lions will be doing as they should lose at least 12 games in 2009. Hopefully by the end of the season we can see Matthew Stafford and the boys take steps that would suggest they are primed for better things in 2010.
