Atlanta Falcons v Detroit Lions

Much has been made of running back Michael Turner and how the Falcons want to use him less this season. The Lions on the other have had themselves a quarterback controversy as Matthew Stafford and Daunte Culpepper are close in the competition for the starting job.

Below is a write up on the notes of interest from this preseason game.

Burner Turner is Ready to Role

All this talk about Turner getting less touches must have ticked him off as he went for a 40 yard touchdown run on the second drive of the game. In the end Turner finished with six carries for 63 yards and a touchdown.

This is the kind of effort that should remind everyone of just how talented this runner is and that he is a beast for fantasy football.

Matt Ryan and Gonzalez

Atlanta Falcons v Detroit Lions
Matt Ryan had a good first game as he was 5 of 7 for 33 yards passing. Tony Gonzalez had one catch for 17 yards, as he is now a major new piece to this dangerous offense.

Roddy White also had two catches for 17 yards as this team seemed to have no problems on the second drive moving the ball right down the Lions home field.

Kevin Smith looking good

Sure Kevin Smith’s 3 carries for 12 yards won’t blow you away but his 2 catches for 27 yards should open your eye’s. This running back has a tremendous heart and will play good and hard in every game this season for the Lions.

With his solid pass catching skills it will make him a good PPR player and a well rounded back for your fantasy football team this year.

Daunte Culpepper and Matthew Stafford

Atlanta Falcons v Detroit Lions

Daunte Culpepper started the game but didn’t do anything really impressive in the first quarter and a half of play. He was sack one time and was 5 of 6 passing for 41 yards in the game.

Matthew Stafford had a bad start to the second half as he threw an interception for a touchdown. But he did bounce back for a decent day of 7 of 14 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown pass.

In the end both quarterbacks played just ok and neither truly moved ahead of the other. Right now I am still pulling for Daunte to win the job to start as it would help Stafford to learn from the bench for at least a month.
