Patriots Run Game: Fred Taylor Headlines a Muddled Situation

New England Patriots Training Camp

The New England Patriots are primed to make a run at their fourth Super Bowl in the past decade as Tom Brady is back with the team. While the Patriots do stand to win many games and light up the scoreboard, it is going to be hard to draft any of their running backs in fantasy football.

This team brings four capable running backs to the table in every game they play as Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney all have good skill sets.

In Fred Taylor you have a player that is the best shake and bake runner on the team and is best suited for the majority of the carries this year.

Sammy Morris is more of the power back on the team and should see more touches when the team plays smaller defensive fronts. He should also be the runner that wins the goal line carry niche on the team as he can power through defenders and into the end zone.

Laurence Maroney is still recovering from his bad shoulder and should come on slow to begin the season but he is the fastest runner of the bunch.

Together we Stand Divided we Fall

This running group as a unit together may be one for the more imposing groups because of their versatility and their ability to always come at you with a fresh pair of legs. What really makes this running game nasty however is that defenses will always be paranoid about having to stop Tom Brady and his band of marry men.

With receivers like Randy Moss to stretch the field and Wes Welker and Ben Watson over the middle, this offensive passing game is a rock solid, with the best player in football chucking the rock to them. By the time you throw in Joey Galloway it is just to overwhelming for most defenses to stop.

New England’s offense and it’s running game are going to be a beast to stop this year but in fantasy football their running backs are almost completely worthless.

Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk will probably see the field the most on the team but they are low end players in yardage leagues and PPR.

If your in a touchdown only league then you Sammy Morris should make for a good pick for your roster as he should have at least seven touchdowns this year. Then again this is Bill Belichick team and you just never know what he is going to do with it’s role players.

Out of the four running backs Laurence Maroney is the one you have to believe has the best talent but he is in the fantasy football life time dog house for busting the past two seasons. It’s hard to know just how good that shoulder really is and we need to see some of the other runners (Fred Taylor or Sammy Morris) go down before he holds value again.

Fantasy Football Information for the Patriots Running Game

If for some reason you have the urge to draft a running back on this team (Patriot fans) then I would suggest that you wait until the very last rounds in the draft to do it. Right now the two running backs that hold the best fantasy football value coming out of the gate should be Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris.

With that said I personally recommend that you stay away from this situation all together. Why put yourself through the week to week hassle of trying to figure out this mess when there are many other runners worth having in fantasy football.
