Patriots/Raiders Trade: Derrick Burgess goes to New England

NFL: Houston Texans at Oakland Raiders

Today the Patriots traded for linebacker/ defensive end Derrick Burgess from the Oakland Raiders. New England gave up a third and fifth round pick in the 2010 draft for the pass rush specialist.

Burgess is coming off his worst season (3.5 sacks) since 2004 when he had only 2.5 sacks that season. In large part Burgess’s numbers were down due to the fact that he only played in only ten games last year.

Before last year Derrick had strong sack numbers for three consecutive years as he posted 35 total sacks in that time.

This off-season Burgess had a falling out with the Raiders and he wanted to be traded away if possible. The Patriots and Raiders have been playing a game of phone tag in the past few months but finally they got the deal done.

Impact of Trade on the Patriots and Raiders Defenses

This trade clearly helps the Patriots defense for this season as they can use Derrick as another pass rush specialist of the edge. On a team like New England expect Burgess numbers to move back up just like Randy Moss did when he came over from Oakland.

For the Raiders they have gotten worse as a defense for this season as they now are without one of their better defensive players and got only draft picks in return. This trade shows me that the Raiders are playing for next year as they are not going to beat the Chargers this season.

Much Turnover in New England

Jacksonville Jaguars v New England Patriots

In the past two seasons the Patriots have gone through much turnover on the defensive side of the football. This team is now going to have an almost entirely new secondary and now they will have Burgess to help them out.

It will be crucially important for the Patriots to generate pressure on the opponents quarterback or this young secondary will be exploited down the field.

Fantasy Football Information for the Patriots Defense

This defense will make for a late starter to be picked up in 12 team fantasy football leagues. The move to acquire Burgess helps out but this team just doesn’t have a strong secondary and it is going to be tough for them when they face good passing teams.

At this point in time I would have a second defense on my fantasy team for the season, until the Patriots prove they can shut down a strong passing game this year. In week one they will get a big test as they play the Buffalo Bills with Terrell Owens and Lee Evans.

If they do well in that game then it will be a big statement for this teams defense and how good the Patriots could be in 2009.
