Titans vs. Bills: Let the Fantasy Football Season Begin!

NFL: Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement

Congratulations to all the men that made it into the Hall of Fame Class of 2009.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way we have a football game to go over for all you fantasy football owners out there. Another pre-season has begun and another hall of fame game is in the books as the Titans beat the Bills by three points tonight.

But no one cares about the score as it is pre-season and this games really don’t matter in who wins and loses. What we all want to know about is how the starting teams looked and if there are any backups worth paying attention too.

For this article I will first talk about the Tennessee Titans and then I will discuss the Buffalo Bills after.

Tennessee Titans looking good in Hall of Fame Game

This teams first offense played pretty good for it’s first pre-season game as Kerry Collins lead the team on two nice drives as he completed 7/10 for 82 yards passing. What impressed me most was the play of free agent acquisition receiver Nate Washington as he looked very good in the offense tonight.

I liked the way the Titans moved him around on the field and had special plays designed to get the ball in his hands out in space. You always wonder if a player can make the jump from being a good No.3 receiver on a winning team to the starting role on another team. Washington looks primed to be used the same way the Titans used to use Derrick Mason in this offense.

That means that Nate should be primed to be the No.1 receiver for this team and will make some exciting plays during the season.

Chris Johnson and LenDale White

This situation was very interesting as the team struggled to run the football early in the game with Chris Johnson. To Chris’s credit he did finish strong with a nice 16 yard run to round out his night of work.

But what I found most interesting is that the Titans choose to go with LeDale White once the got the ball inside the ten yard line. In White’s two carries from their he plowed right throughout the Bills defense and scored a touchdown.

Yes LenDale didn’t do much in his work after that but the fact that the Titans used him inside the ten, has to make fantasy owners wonder if he will be the touchdown back again this year. I wasn’t sure that he would be the goal line man as Chris “Dream” Johnson said he was his own man this year and was going to be the feature guy.

Well it looks to me that Chris may see his fantasy stock drop a bit if he can’t keep a grip on the carries from the ten yard line in.

Vince Young was Sour then Sweet

Vince Young’s performance tonight was like those Sour / Sweet candy commercials you see on tv. The little sour piece of candy does something bad and then the Sweet side does something nice to make up for it.

In the first drive that Vince had I thought he threw one of the worst interceptions I’ve seen in a long time. That interception looked so bad I almost started believing the rumors that he might be the third quarterback on the team this year.

But then his Sweet side came out and he lead his team down for a very nice looking touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to Paul Williams.

I was happy for Young as I hope he will be able to recover his career and do well from here.

Buffalo Bills Need Some Work on the Offensive Line

Hall of Fame Game: Buffalo Bills v Tennessee Titans

At first I really liked what I saw in the Bills new no huddle offense they are using this season. They had a very nice tempo and it threw the Titans defense for a loop as they were a bit confused on the field.

As the first drive progressed and on into the second drive the Titans started figuring out this teams offense and applied better pressure.

While Terrell Owens did look very good in the one drive he was in for 2 catches and 27 yards, it is clear the Bills need some work on the offensive line.

Below I have a listing of the Buffalo Bills projected offensive line and what it used to look like just one season ago.

Fantasy Info- The Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Change

In the document you will notice that the offensive line has completely changed and they are projected to be using two rookie linemen this year. One of those rookies was a center in college and is now moving to guard.

If this team is to keep injury prone quarterback Trent Edwards up right this season they are going to have to improve on their pass blocking. I don’t believe Edwards was sacked tonight but to many times I saw defensive linemen coming in and putting pressure on him early.

This needs to change and I believe fantasy football owners should drop down all Bill players a round in their rankings until they prove they have better protection.

Another area they need to improve in is the red zone as they were able to move the ball well but could not punch it in for touchdowns.

True Terrell Owens was not in the game very long and when he’s around his presence should help them in that regard.

In the end this is just a pre-season game and it doesn’t really count but these were some of the interesting things I thought were worth noting, as we all move one day closer to our fantasy football drafts.

Good Info, Good Night and Good Luck……Or Wait Till Next Year.
