LB Joey Porter Signs With Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals needed to acquire players to help fill the shoes left behind by Antrel Rolle at safety and top defensive player Karlos Dansby at linebacker. To fill the safety position the team netted former Jets’ safety Kerry Rhodes early in March.
Now, Coach Ken Whisenhunt has reunited with former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter as the two were together when Pittsburgh won their 2005 Super Bowl. No doubt Porter will bring some leadership to the team, and he knows the 3-4 style defense very well as he had wonderful success in Pittsburgh.
Last season Porter had nine sacks in 14 games, and he had another 17.5 sacks for the Dolphins just the year before that. While these numbers are very good, Porter didn’t apply as much pressure overall last season, and he was benched for a few games for team reasons.
Still, count on the veteran to instantly help a defense that will need to create pressure and should with quarterbacks like Matt Hasselbeck (no offensive line), Alex Smith and a probable rookie under center in St. Louis.
With that cast of quarterbacks above it is easy to say that the Cardinals have the weakest inter division quarterback tandem to face in all of football. Expect Porter to flourish in his sack numbers once again this season.
