New Orleans Saints v Philadelphia Eagles

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Kevin Kolb received an opportunity to start in weeks two and three because Donovan McNabb was injured. In that time Kolb shined as he connected with DeSean Jackson for big touchdown scores and the team had good offensive success.

These performances are part of the reason why the Eagles felt ok with trading McNabb away to a division rival (that was dumb to send him to Washington) and gave Kolb the starting job this offseason.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Kolb still needs to prove he can be a good quarterback from week one all the way through a season.

Kolb is in a situation that is very comparable to Aaron Rodgers just a few seasons ago as he was taking over for a star quarterback and needed to prove he was worth it. At the same time, Rodgers had a great supporting cast and a good West Coast System.

The same holds true for Kolb has he has good players around him on the offensive line and in the skill positions. Beyond that he is also in a productive pass first West Coast System and is set up to have success.

What Kolb lacks that Rodgers excels at is he doesn’t have a great arm for the deep ball. Kolb isn’t necessarily weak but his game is more in the short and mid range passing game. Delivering to football on time with accuracy is the game that Kolb posses and that should translate onto the field in 2010.

Normally, I don’t put unproven players over solid proven veterans, but because I’ve seen Kolb play well last year and the situation he has, I’ve got him ahead of McNabb and Jay Cutler for this season.

My big concern for Kolb isn’t if he will move the football and play well, it is how many touchdowns will he throw. Usually young quarterbacks in the West Coast offense can move the ball but putting in the touchdowns in another story.

Thankfully, Kolb has big time playmaking talents at receiver as Jackson and even Jeremy Maclin can take it to the house with their speed. Hitting pass catchers accurately is going to be very important for Kolb’s overall fantasy value in 2010.
