NFC Championship: Philadelphia Eagles v Arizona Cardinals

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Brent Celek was a fantasy breakout waiting to happen as we saw him evolve in the Eagles passing game late the year before. Breakout Celek did as he posted almost 1,000 yards receiving and eight touchdowns on the season.

A productive, healthy season made Celek one of the better options at tight end a fantasy owner could have for the 2009 season.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Like all pass catchers for the Eagles, we will have to find out if they can still be productive with Donovan McNabb now gone from the team. Kevin Kolb is slated to take over as the team starter as he’s projected to be a strong quarterback in short to mid range accuracy than McNabb.

At the same time, Kolb doesn’t have the arm to throw the deep ball like McNabb but that shouldn’t hurt Celek. Most of the time a coach isn’t going to ask his tight end to run a deep pattern, especially when they already have DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

For my money, I believe Celek has a better chance to remain productive over Jackson because he is still the biggest target on the field for touchdown opportunities inside the red zone. With an accurate Kolb, the team should move the football in the West Coast offense all year.

Young quarterbacks do tend to struggle converting touchdowns from a close range in their first year or so in the West Coast and that will be something to watch for. Still, when they do convert, Celek’s number should be one that is often called.
