DENVER - SEPTEMBER 20: Wide reciever Eddie Royal #19 of the Denver Broncos is unable to make a reception in the endzone as defensive back Brandon McDonald #22 of the Cleveland Browns during NFL action at Invesco Field at Mile High on September 20, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. 2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Eddie Royal had a great rookie season when he totaled over 90 receptions with Jay Cutler and Mike Shanahan in the organization. The following offseason we all know that Cutler and Shanahan were gone and a new era came to Denver.

With this change brought a big drop in Royal’s production on the field as he dropped all the way down to 37 receptions in his second season. This horrible total made Royal irrelevant in fantasy and hurt a once promising career.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Even when Brandon Marshall was off the team week seventeen last year it was Jabar Gaffney that broke out for a big day against the Chiefs and not Royal. That game was key to understanding how underutilized Royal has become in Coach Josh McDaniels offense.

This offseason Royal has worked in the slot position which was where Wes Welker worked out of when McDaniels was the offensive coordinator in New England.

Rookie receiver Demaryious Thomas has missed time with a foot injury and will likely take over for Gaffney once he’s ready to move into a starting role. This means Royal should remain active on the field if Gaffney or Thomas is the opposite starter.

Now we need to find out if McDaniels is going to give Royal a big up tick in work, and we won’t know that until the season is under way. In the end, Royal is a stash away player at best. He has shown he can be fantasy relevant in the past, but we need to see an improvement in his overall production before he finds a starting spot on even a PPR league starting roster.
