4×4 Mixed League Cheat Sheet
Some of you may wonder what the difference between a 4×4 fantasy baseball league is to a 5×5 league. 4×4, is the less popular of the two, as it tends to have four hitting categories (BA, HR, RBI, SB) and four pitching (W, ERA, WHIP, S) categories while 5×5 includes runs and strikeouts, respectively.
This basically means that a pitcher like A’s Trevor Cahill will be more valuable in a league like this because he won 18 games last season and posts a good ERA and WHIP, but doesn’t strikeout many batters. Another pitcher like closer Carlos Marmol loses attraction because his ridiculous strikeout ratio hold no value in this league.
Hitters who tend to be hurt most by a league like this are speedsters like Juan Pierre of the Chicago White Sox. Since Pierre is a leadoff man he has to thrive at stolen bases, and runs scored to be a weekly option for a fantasy baseball team.
Without runs, Pierre is losing out on a category that he excels in and thus won’t be as desirable on draft day. Hitters that can provide power, RBI’s but still steal some bases like Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez are a little more valuable.
Fantasy baseball owners will still need players who can steal bases but at the same time give more value to the team than just that category. Ramirez can do just that, and he is a clear top three selection in 4×4 fantasy baseball leagues because of it.
