Adam Wainwright + Tommy John?

The Cardinals are projected to receive a significant blow to their pitching staff this week as star pitcher Adam Wainwright is projected to possibly undergo Tommy John Surgery because of an elbow problem.
Look to Chris Carpenter and Jamie Garcia as pitchers that will need to pick up the slack left by the loss of Wainwright as he clearly looks to be done for the 2011 season. Wainwright was a runner up for the Cy Young over the past two seasons, and he looked set for another run at the pitching top prize.
Sadly, Wainwright may never grasp that award, but hopefully he can return to top shape by 2013 as it takes a couple of years to make a full recovery from Tommy John Surgery.
This has already been a bad off-season for the Cardinals as they were already dealing with the Albert Pujols contract and now they are on the door step of losing their top pitcher.

As you can see by the numbers of the past few season, Wainwright was a big part of the Cardinals success. Just trying to account for the 230 plus innings he’s thrown for each of the past two season will put a strain on the teams bull pen.
Averaging 19.5 wins over the past two seasons won’t be easy to pick back up as well so look to division foes like the Brewers, Cubs and Reds as having better odds to win the division.
