AL Only Auction Draft Values

Many of you that are playing fantasy baseball regularly are probably involved in at least one auction draft league. It doesn’t seem to matter if you’re in a room full of friends and family or on an online live draft, if you participate in an auction league, you will need to have a strategy before you start bidding.

The values listed on this cheat sheet are based on a standard 260 dollar cap, and you can even do regular mock drafts at this value on ESPN or CBS Sportsline throughout the off-season to help you get ready for your real draft.

In AL only fantasy baseball leagues, the value for most players will be stronger than in a mixed league because you have less talent to draw from. Most of the time I wouldn’t recommend going for a player in AL only leagues for more than four dollars than you would normally pay in mixed drafts.

That said, if there are certain fantasy players you really want to acquire on your squad, you will need to be prepared to bid higher than average. A player like Derek Jeter may not be worth the 25 dollar auction value given on the cheat sheet below but when you look at the overall talent at shortstop his value goes higher.

During draft day you might be able to acquire Jeter at a lower price, but you should be prepared to get into a bidding war with a fellow owner if they’ve come into the draft wanting Jeter because he’s a proven talent.

One catcher who will come at a value this season but could produce as a top five catcher is Blue Jays J.P. Arencibia. I have him listed at five dollars in this cheat sheet, and he should go around that price unless his ADP moves up in the coming month.

All in all, it is recommended that you have a strong sense of how you want to attack your auction before you get to draft so that you have a clear understanding of what it will take to get the overall team you’re looking to acquire. Good luck in the up coming 2011 fantasy baseball season.
