Shortstops: ADP Rankings

Jimmy Rollins is still holding on as one of the top five shortstops for fantasy baseball. This offseason Rollins actually started to workout as early as November and that is an improvement from years past. Maybe a new dedication to keeping himself inshape will payoff for fantasy owners.

The shortstop ADP Rankings below are as listed on Mock Draft Central for mixed 5×5 leagues.

Shortstops ADP Rankings

1. Hanley Ramirez -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
2.09 1 4 1st Round

The Marlins will probably be a better team than many expect as their young hitters should progress around Hanley Ramirez. My only concern for Ramirez isn’t the fact that Dan Uggla is gone from the lineup but more that his attitude needs to stay in check. Winning can go a long way to a positive attitude, and Ramirez should be ready for another fine season.

2. Troy Tulowitzki -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
4.73 2 8 1st Round

The Rockies are inline to make a run for the playoffs this season as long as they can get respectable pitching. Troy Tulowitzki is a top five selection in mixed leagues as his overall numbers are strong for any position, let alone shortstop. You may have to ride through a slow spring, but Tulo’s numbers will be there in the end.

3. Jose Reyes -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
28.29 19 37 2nd / 3rd Round

I’m usually not a Jose Reyes fan but this season I believe he will post strong numbers while targeting a new contract. Reyes will be moving on to another team this offseason so a trade in July is possible if the Mets should get off to a bad start. New York’s pitching may be a problem this year, but I actually think they’re hitting will do well. Don’t be surprised if Reyes finds a way to post 45 stolen bases this season.

4. Jimmy Rollins -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
41.31 33 59 4th Round

In February, I had Jimmy Rollins as a fantasy bust this season once again, but now I believe he might be alright. Rollins actually worked out all offseason and that is a big change from past years. The Phillies are desperate for Rollins to have a bounce back year as Chase Utley won’t be healthy and Jayson Werth has left to the Nationals.

5. Derek Jeter -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
47.52 40 72 4th Round

The Yankees might move Brett Gardner up to the leadoff spot and move Derek Jeter back to his traditional second in the order. That would be a good move as Jeter excels in that spot and will have another dependable season.

6. Elvis Andrus -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
71.12 51 95 6th Round

After Jeter, there is a big drop off in ADP rankings at the shortstop position. Elvis Andrus needs to post around 40 stolen bases and hit a good average to be worth a selection over Alexei Ramirez. That might happen as Andrus looks good in spring thus far.

7. Alexei Ramirez -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
98.95 53 126 9th Round

For my money, I would select Alexei Ramirez over Andrus because he gets you added power and the White Sox have good momentum coming into this season. Andrus had to play an extra month last season as the Rangers made it to the World Series, and Ramirez will have Adam Dunn hitting behind him this season.

8. Stephen Drew -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
117.82 75 138 10th Round

Stephen Drew should be a dependable shortstop for your squad at this point in the draft. The Diamondbacks look like a team that’s ready to improve and Drew will be productive.

9. Rafael Furcal -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
141.38 96 191 12th Round

10. Alex Gonzalez -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
153.44 121 269 13th Round

This wright up is for both Rafael Furcal and Alex Gonzalez. Both shortstops are worth having on a fantasy baseball team but at this point in their careers your better off going with youngsters with better upside. Starlin Castro and Ian Desmond should out produce these veterans, and you can get them cheaper.

11. Starlin Castro -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
155.74 86 194 13th Round

Starlin Castro is an up and coming young prospect, and he hit .300 in his first full season with the Cubs. At this point, in your draft, Castro provides you a steady play at the shortstop position with decent upside.

12. Asdrubal Cabrera -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
167.75 148 257 14th Round

A healthy Asdrubal Cabrera should be a nice pick in the middle rounds of your draft. No, he won’t play on a great team but the Indians could surprise some people if their team gets healthy. Look for Cabrera to be a reasonable gamble at this point in the draft to produce well.

13. Ian Desmond -

ADP Earliest Latest Projected Round (12 TM)
169.20 121 ND 15th Round

Ian Desmond is my favorite infield sleeper for 2011 as his value is low and his upside is solid. Desmond may not his a .300 batting average but he has decent power and decent speed. Desmond is going to be a clear top ten shortstop for fantasy baseball this season but is going at the thirteen spot at the shortstop position.
