Finding a quality team defense can be a challenge sometimes but generally there are a few teams that tend to find their way into the top five or ten squads to own for fantasy football most seasons. In recent years the Steelers and Packers have been two of the best defenses around, and they should continue to be strong options this year.

Across the internet, I’ve found that both of those squads are consistently the top two taken in mock drafts and ranked on various fantasy football websites. While the Jets, Giants, Eagles, Ravens and Patriots can have their ups and downs, they are respectable top defenses to own on your team, when building a team from scratch in redraft leagues.

My philosophy on team defenses is that a few groups are worth starting regularly, each season, but those teams tend to change from year to year. Even reliable defenses like the Steelers have years were key players are injured, and they are struggling to play at the level you would expect. With just about every other position on your fantasy squad, your drafting an individual and while they can be effected by the players around them, it is only team defense that you need the entire group to play well for success.

This is why we have the Vikings defense ranked outside the top ten this year, because the “Williams Wall” is expected to finally serve their four game suspensions for the Star Caps violation from a few years ago. Without those big men in the middle for a month, fantasy owners will need to look to other options at the start of the season, and as you can see by the ADP values below, the Vikings are down to the 9th overall group going off the board.

While it will hurt the Vikings to not have their run defenders, it could work out to fantasy owners’ advantage after their suspension as both will have less wear and tear going into the final three months of the season.

As you may notice, not defense were taken until the 13th round for standard ten team fantasy leagues and that is typical for redraft internet play. Generally you want to build the depth of your squad in your position players first, and then find a defense you believe is worth starting most weeks. When your squad plays a high scoring offense, you will probably want to look to the defenses listed in our honorable mention section and see if they play an easy matchup. Those squad may not get draft but a few of them are going to be starting at some point this season.

Of the group, I expect the Bears defense to be drafted in most leagues and I think the only reason they’ve been missed in Mock Draft Centrals ADP listing is because they are low on their computer rankings. Anyway, we will have more ADP values listed throughout the summer from other websites around the internet to give you a range of options to look at.
