Top 2012 TE Free Agents

Before a year officially ends in the NFL, preparations have already been underway for months as to whom all 32 teams are looking to target for the upcoming draft, and in the free-agent market. While teams still hold rights to franchise tags, and have the ability to retain various players before free agency begins in March, I have a list of the players I feel are top tight ends listed below.

When free agency opens up I will update this list, and all other positions linked below. Outside of the actual season taking place, the anticipation of free agency has to be one of my favorite times of the year, as NFL Futures will change, not just for the players who sign with new teams – but for their new fellow teammates as well.

Player (former team) New Team Notes
Fred Davis (Was)  Franchise Tag  Despite his suspension for substance abuse, Fred Davis still consider a valuable piece of the Redskins offense, by the team. Why not, as they’ve struggled to re-build their receiving corps with bust draft picks like Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas.Leonard Hankerson is battling an injury (hip) that will likely hurt his performance this year, and Moss is old.Davis should be one of the top targets in the offense again, and a top ten fantasy tight end.

John Carlson (Sea)  Vikings,5 yr, 25 million  I know John Carlson has talent, but at some point I have to wonder if some teams just get lost in all the measurable’s a player has, and discounts the actual production he puts out on the field.Carlson will help this offense, but he did miss all of 2011 with a shoulder injury, and with Kyle Rudolph on the team, this won’t be an attractive fit for fantasy purposes.

Jacob Tamme (Ind)
Martellus Bennett (Dal)  Giants With both of the Giants top tight ends going down with ACL tears in the Super Bowl, Martellus Bennett, gives Manning an offensive weapon for the first half of the season.Bennett is likely going to be a headache for the Giants, but they should have known what they were getting into before the signed him.

Bennett can also help in the running game as well, so IF they can properly motivate him, he could be a key contributor in the short run.

Joel Dreessen (Hou)
Scott Chandler (Buf)  Re-Signed2 yr Chandler is one of Fitzpatick’s favorite targets in the red zone, and his six touchdowns from a year ago back that up.
Jeremy Shockey (Car)
Visanthe Shiancoe (Min)

Kevin Boss signs with Chiefs – Sorry, didn’t know Boss was going to be on the market as for some reason I actually thought the Raiders would hold onto him. Why should they as it seems their new GM is intent on blowing up everything that came before him. While I think the Raiders are falling into the toilet, the addition of Boss is a good move for the Chiefs as Tony Moeaki is coming off a knee injury, and now they have added insurance.
