It’s been a rough couple of seasons for Antonio Gates owners as his foot ailments have held him out of action. While some will shy away from targeting Gates as a top five tight end, I’m on board as the veteran has admitted his foot is close to 100 percent as of OTAs. Head Coach Norv Turner has also commented on how good Gates has looked in practice.
Say what you will about Turner’s abilities to lead a team, but the guy is a brilliant offensive coordinator, and he’s still calling the shots for this offense. Turner knows how to use a player like Gates to set up miss match opportunities for not just Gates but those around him.
With Vincent Jackson gone, and Vincent Brown slated to be a backup; Gates could return close to the numbers we saw in 2010, before the foot injury cost him the final six weeks of the season. Gates was having his best year as a pro, and I don’t care if Philip Rivers fails to bounce back from his ailments or struggles last year, Gates will remain his top target.
