Week 11 TE Rankings

It looked like Greg Olsen was off to a career year after the first four games of the season in which he collected at least six receptions in three of those games. As Cam Newton regressed so did the rest of the Panthers offense and all too often the game plan seemed to get away from their talented tight end.

In recent weeks Olsen’s numbers have come back to life and last week he had his top performance of the year with nine receptions for 102 yards and two touchdown scores. Oddly enough, Olsen was featured on the Panthers first drive but he seemed to fade out of the offense until a fourth-quarter drive gave him his second touchdown in garbage time.

Unfortunately, we must consider Olsen a gamble start going forward because offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski is doing a terrible job utilizing the talent he has to work with. Too often you see players like Olsen or Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, or even Steve Smith make a big play only to watch them fade away from the offense for great lengths of time.

Olsen will face one of the worst secondaries in football this week as the Panthers host the Buccaneers. Olsen had respectable numbers against Tampa Bay week one, so consider his odds of return good numbers worth the gamble of starting him this week.

What Did We Learn From Week 10?

- A touchdown in three of his past four games, Antonio Gates is starting to turn things around. We’ve are still yet to see a big game from Gates or a 100-yard performance, but we should feel good about him remaining in our lineups going forward.

Gates had two touchdowns against the Broncos the last time he faced them on Monday night football, so let’s hope he’s up for a big game this week.

- Jermaine Gresham continues to find ways to remain in your lineups as a low-end TE1 option. The Bengals will continue to be a pass happy team this year so the odds of Gresham producing consistent numbers is likely.

Sean’s Week 11 Watch List

- Hopefully Alex Smith will return from his concussion suffered against the Rams. If so, bump Vernon Davis up from 10th on this list to 6th. While Colin Kaepernick did a respectable job in the second half of the game, he’s clearly not ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Without Smith in the lineup, Davis will be a borderline starter going forward.

- It was surprising to see Aaron Hernandez fail to play against the Bills after basically three weeks of rest. Probably safe to assume the Patriots either brought him back too fast from his ankle injury or he just suffered another setback and has to miss extended time.

Of course New England is hush, hush about every injury they have so we will have to keep an eye on the practice reports and the before game inactive list to determine if Hernandez is a go this week. I’ve gone ahead and left him off the list this week, but if he’s on the field, get him in your lineup.
