Fantasy Football Outlook: The message was sent to Steven Jackson last off-season that his days in St.Louis were numbered when Jeff Fisher selected Isaiah Pead in the second round and then Richardson later in the draft.
While Jackson continued to work as the starter, it was Richardson and not Pead that was the primary backup. Richardson responded with a 4.8 yard per carry average on 98 touches and clearly outplayed his fellow rookie.
Now Jackson is gone, but we shouldn’t look past Pead to carve out a role in this offense. I still like Richardson to beatout Pead on the depth chart (for early down work), but it’s rookie Zac Stacy that could spoil the party for dynasty owners hoping either of these second-year backs will breakout.
This will be a situation to keep an eye on during training camp and injury could have a key role in deciding who moves up or down the depth chart in this cluttered, young backfield. I like Stacy to win the early down role and if Pead can get his career together, he has a chance to be the main third down back.
Richardson may make his mark in fantasy leagues at some point but he’s a late round speculative pick at this point.
