Fantasy Football Outlook: While Houston had a handful of young receivers behind Andre Johnson, they decided it was time to invest a first-round pick in a starter opposite him when they selected DeAndre Hopkins out of Clemson.
While other receivers in the 2013 class may bring more big-play ability in Cordarrelle Patterson or Justin Hunter, it is Hopkins that is probably the receiver best ready to make an impact as a starter. Comparisons to Roddy White were tossed around by draftniks heading into the draft, and when watching him on tape it’s easy to see why.
I think Hopkins has WR1 potential down the road in fantasy leagues but it will be a challenge for him to hold anything more than WR3 value as long as Johnson is around. Best fit for PPR leagues, with Johnson on the team, you know he will be the main possession receiver and Owen Daniels will get his looks as well.
Hopkins should be the favorite to start opposite Johnson by week one, but in redraft leagues we shouldn’t look to the rookie as more than a late round addition. He will benefit from playing against second rate corners and single coverage as teams focus on Johnson, Daniels and let’s not forget the running game led by Arian Foster.
It’s possible Hopkins could emerge as a WR3 starter in his rookie season but he needs to stay on the bench to being the year and let’s see what he can do with the targets he receives from Matt Schaub.
