Fantasy Football Outlook: While Lacy had a productive final season at Alabama, I wasn’t sold on him as a projected first-round pick, even after his big performance during the Championship Game against the Fighting Irish.

Lacy should be a productive back as long as injury and possible weight concerns don’t hurt him. The problem is, after a hamstring injury in January, I have serious concerns about a player who still couldn’t finish his Pro Day workout in April.

I realize a hamstring injury limits what you can do in terms of training and you conditioning will be a problem because if it. Lacy is a big guy, and when he’s not training, I think we should be concerned that he’s the type that is not only slow to rebound from injury, but also to round back into form in terms of on the field performance after coming back.

These are bad signs for fantasy owners as a 2 to 3 week injury could mean more like 3 to 5 for recovery and another 2 weeks or longer until we see him look like the player we knew – on the field and in the box score – before the injury.

Lacy didn’t need a lot of carries to get his production last year, and that’s a good thing because the offense won’t go through the ground game unless something happens to Aaron Rodgers.

Not to mention the presence of fellow rookie Johnathan Franklin, who for what it’s worth was my favorite player for dynasty league rookie drafts before the NFL draft. I like Franklin to be the running back that wins this job over time, but Lacy should be the better option to own in 2013.

As long as Lacy is healthy (likely a problem at some point) he should get first crack at the starting job and makes for a backup selection somewhere around the 7th round down. Unfortunately, Lacy is still going in the 5th round of 12 team leagues, and it may take an injury to knock him down to a point where I would consider him.
