Fantasy Football Outlook: Not sure whether Wheaton will emerge as the next Mike Wallace but I like his odds of doing so. Wheaton was impressive at Oregon State and will be the Steelers top big-play threat as soon as he’s ready for regular work.
Expect that to come early, and while it’s unlikely to see Wheaton start to begin the season, veteran Emmanuel Sanders has a history of injuries and I’m not sure he can hold up for a full season as a starter. If an injury should occur we could see Wheaton emerge as a waiver wire darling and help teams to championships in the second half of the season.
For now, Wheaton will be in the same role as Wallace when he was a rookie and that’s an explosive weapon that won’t be used on an every down basis. He won’t draw top coverage in his rookie year and should take advantage of it. Perhaps Wheaton isn’t worth drafting in the summer as long as Sanders and Antonio Brown are healthy, but we need to keep an eye on his progress.
