Fantasy Football Outlook: If you went by the stats Vernon Davis put up in Colin Kaepernick’s first career start against the Bears and the 49ers final two playoff games, you would think Davis should be in the conversation to be the first tight end off the board.
Unfortunately it’s what happened in between that time coupled with the loss of Michael Crabtree that has many questioning which Davis will show up?
Davis is one of the more talented tight ends in football and if he were playing with Tom Brady or Drew Brees throughout his career he would be on the fast track for the Hall of Fame. Yes, he’s that good.
While Alex Smith helped Davis earn Pro Bowl honors, I believe the upside is there with Kaepernick to be an elite option in fantasy leagues.
Perhaps the biggest key for Davis to have top five success won’t rely on Kaepernick as much as the play of the 49ers secondary. As the secondary struggled in the playoffs, the 49ers were forced to throw the football more than they would like, thus giving Davis more opportunities.
With Dashon Goldson gone and the only main addition to the corner population being Nnamdi Asomugha, I think this group will struggle against capable passing offenses. Not good when the Rams, Cardinals and Seahawks have all upgraded at quarterback and their skill position players over the past two seasons.
Factor in that San Francisco will face teams out of division like the Falcons and Packers and even if Davis has a few dud games against lower competition, he should give us at least low-end TE1 production with the possibility of leading fantasy leagues in points at his position as his upside.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
Trouble picking up the new playbook early in the season, slowed Vernon Davis down to nothing more than a TE2, in the first month.
However, Davis got things going as the season moved along and in the playoffs, he reminded us all just how dominant his skill set can be. Not only was Davis clutch, but he was ripping of one big play after another, racing by defensive backs.
This offseason the 49ers were committed to adding more of a vertical presence at receiver. I believe this will be a benefit to Davis, and he should be a top seven tight end. Unlike last year, the 49ers have a challenging schedule and will be forced to put the ball in the air, more often.
Davis will post better numbers and I expect him to surpass 900 yards and seven touchdowns this year.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
Many may look at the 49ers quarterback situation and knock Vernon Davis a little more than need be. Personally, I’m a 49ers fan, and I watched the games (sorry to say) they played last season. It wasn’t a pretty picture on offense but in the end Davis still found a way to post over 900 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. In Jim Harbaugh, Davis finally has an offensive minded Head Coach for the first time in his career, and this teams offensive line should play better with their two first round pick rookies having a year under their belts. With a creative passing game, Davis should have no problem reaching over 900 yards and at least nine touchdowns on the season.
While Davis is a better touchdown maker than Jason Witten, I have the Cowboys tight end ranked above him in PPR leagues, but in standard leagues Davis gets the nod. Look for Davis to have another productive season as he’s clearly the 49ers top pass catcher and will stay involved in this offense, with more consistency than last year.

Vernon Davis produced the season that fantasy owners have waited for throughout his career. After coach Singletary challenged his star tight end in 2008 by sending him off the field, Davis to his own admission has been a different player. Look for Davis to continue his strong play as he is truly a fantasy stud.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: In ’08 Mike Singletary made headlines in his first game as a head coach when he sent Vernon Davis to the locker room before the game was over.
Since that time Davis has played like a new man as he finally became the fantasy star in 2009, we all expected him to be when he came into the league. Not only was Davis a solid fantasy play all year, but he tied the all time tight end touchdown record (held by Antonio Gates) at thirteen for the season.
2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: With a new outlook and preparation to the game of football, Davis is the top pass catcher in San Francisco. Look for Alex Smith to find Davis regularly as the team has upgraded on the offensive line and Smith should have some time to throw.
We don’t have Davis as the top fantasy tight end this year (No.2) but if he shows a second big year in a row, he will be our unquestioned favorite fantasy TE for 2011.
