2013 ADP Trends: Running Backs

It feels like a throwback year for fantasy drafts as running backs are dominating the early portion of the draft with nine backs going in the first round of ten team leagues. What makes the 2013 class different than past groups is of top 13 options present little concern in terms of injury, or lack of production on there resume.

That wasn’t the case just a season ago; coming into August we saw Ryan Mathews, DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden, Jamaal Charles and Adrian Peterson were all top options that were either coming off a major injury or had a history of health problems.

On my personal draft board I even had two rookies in Trent Richardson and Doug Martin in the top ten running backs because of the uncertainty of the position.

As it turns out some of the tailbacks with injury concerns worked out and others did not, while Martin and Richardson played well.

Don’t Forget About The Man From Washington

While Richardson and Martin are worthy of first round selections this year, there is another second year running back we should consider as a first-round pick in Redskins starter Alfred Morris.

Morris ran for 1,600 yards and what impressed me most about his performance was that the rookie not only carried a bigger workload down the stretch but played his best football in the final month of the season.

A week 17 performance against the Cowboys with over 200-yards rushing and three touchdowns, with a division title on the line, should be all we need to know about what this young runner is made of and how his coaches feel about him.

Already a clutch, go to option in the offense, we shouldn’t worry about Coach Mike Shanahan tinkering with his bell cow back. Because of the track record running backs have in Shanahan’s zone-blocking offense; I’m confident Morris will have another terrific season, so don’t worry (for the running game that is) if you hear about teams catching up to the zone-read offense.

If Morris lands in your lap in the second round, pick him up in standard leagues over options like Jimmy Graham or A.J. Green. Morris may not have the receiving skills of some of the backs in front of him, but he’s going to be a productive back weekly, and a terrific RB2 option.
