If Louis Delmas can stay on the field, Detroit may have themselves a bounce back year on defense with the addition of Glover Quin at safety. Both safeties bring accountability to the backfield, while the Lions sort out a crop of young corners behind veteran Chris Houston.

Playing well in the secondary will be important, because if they give front line stars like Ndamukong Suh and Nick Failrey a second or two longer to get to the quarterback, it will be trouble for opposing signal callers.

Development Of Rookie Defensive Ends Will Be Key To Lions Success

We also need to keep an eye on the development of rookie defensive ends Ezekiel Ansah and Devin Taylor as both has terrific upside. While veterans Willie Young, Jason Jones and Israel Idonije may win playing time in front of the rookies, as the season goes along I figure both rookies will earn time, at least in sub-package downs.

Ansah is raw, but he was a top ten pick in this years draft and has the ability to be a double-digit sack producer, with Suh and Fairley drawing attention up the middle.

Because of the division the Lions play in, and the fact that we need to see them show well before investing in them as an option off the waiver wire, I think it’s best to leave them alone on draft day.

That said, if they do play well week one against the Vikings, they would be an instant option to target for the second week of the season when they face the Cardinals suspect offensive line. For those of you that plan to utilize the waiver wire throughout the season add the defensive position, the Lions should be an option to target.
