Yeah I’ll admit it, I’m a Russell Wilson fan, even though I’m a lifelong 49ers fan. Perhaps it’s because Wilson appears to be a nice guy or maybe it’s because I like to see a fellow “short guy” have success in the pros.

Whatever the reason(s) Wilson earned respect around the league in his rookie season and I believe we’ve seen enough to believe he will be starting in the NFL for a long time, while playing at a Pro Bowl level.

Some may hold back on awarding him that praise until after he has another successful season (giving defensive coordinators time to make adjustments to his game) but I feel confident in ranking him as one of the top six quarterbacks for fantasy drafts this summer.

The Loss Of Percy Harvin

Both Wilson and fellow 2012 breakout quarterback Colin Kaepernick lost elite receivers this offseason, but in Wilson’s case Percy Harvin was an addition to his group of receivers. Michael Crabtree on the other hand, was Kaepernick’s go to option and was one of the few playmakers in the 49ers passing offense.

Typically young quarterbacks who have success can move the football up and down the field, accumulating yardage but converting drives into touchdowns is another thing. Wilson on the other hand, had one of the better totals for a rookie in NFL history with 26-touchdown passes in his rookie campaign.

While we should expect the Seahawks to remain a run first team, Coach Pete Carroll won’t keep the training wheels on the passing game like he did through the first half of Wilson’s rookie season.

Couple Wilson’s abilities in the passing game with his upside as a running option and you have a second-year quarterback primed to rival any of the other young quarterbacks to choose from on draft day.
