As far as fantasy football goes the regular season is now over, and, unless you plan on playing a playoff’s version of fantasy football that means your waiting until next year for your next contest.

Below I have some observations from the 17th week of the regular season as I share with my final notes of the fantasy football season for this year and what to keep an eye out for heading into next season.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Seventeen Notes:

Patriots Lose Wes Welker

It’s not like the Patriots had nothing to play for in this game as the number three seed in the AFC hanged in the balance. With a Patriots’ loss and a Bengals win tonight, the Bengals would have the number three seed in the AFC.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, their star receiver Wes Welker went down after trying to make a cut against a defender and went straight to the ground.

Even worse for Welker and the Patriots is that they’ve already received the news that Welker has a torn acl and mcl in his knee.

Now, Welker is not only done for the season but will probably miss some time into next season as well. This is a horrible injury to have and it’s even worse this late in the fantasy football season.

Welker is now clearly not a top twenty five receiver and we need to see just when he will be able to play again. Don’t expect him to comeback and start catching ten footballs a game as this injury will take time.

Expect Welker to be his old self in 2011 but in 2010 he will probably struggle to help fantasy owners until he gets his full strength back.

Jamaal Charles Goes Off

There is just no doubt about the fact that Jamaal Charles will be the Chiefs starting running back heading into 2010. Not only that but it looks like Charles has turned himself into a clear top fifteen fantasy football running back heading into next year as well.

Charles ran for 259 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in this game and had strong consistent numbers all through the final games of the year.

For the season Charles had 190 carries for 1,120 yards rushing (5.9 ypc) and seven rushing touchdowns. Not only did Charles have strong rushing numbers, but he had 40 receptions for 297 yards and a touchdown catch as well.

All these numbers came in just ten starts, this season and that is why this kid has a very bright future.

The only knocks on Charles coming into next year is if he can run well from week one to the end of the year and if the team will use a goal line back. In this game, the Chiefs used different running backs at times when the team got inside the five yard line.

Beyond those issues, this kid has a world of talent and has a chance to score on any play. It will be very interesting to see just how well this young runner does next fantasy football season.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Sixteen Notes:

Matt Moore the New Panthers Starter?

If Matt Moore isn’t starting over Jake Delhomme to begin next year he probably will be in not that long of time. Delhomme had a horrible season and Moore has had a great end to this year.

Fantasy football owners can now draft a player like Steve Smith next year with confidence that if Delhomme can’t get it done, Moore can make Smith very productive.

Speaking of productive, Jonathan Stewart had a huge game with over 200 yards rushing and a touchdown in this game. Stewart was giving a chance to get the full load with DeAngelo Williams out with an ankle injury.

Look for the Panthers to bounce back next year and make a strong run for the playoffs.

Breaking Fantasy Owners Hearts

For such a great game last week against the Jaguars, the Colts’ fantasy players like Peyton Manning, Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne had a completely different game this week.

This was a very disappointing situation for fantasy owners to have to decide on as this team played so competitively last week. The Colts probably tipped their hand when they signed practice squad quarterback Drew Willy on Saturday.

With an extra quarterback on the team, it seemed likely that the Colts were serious after all about sitting their players no matter the situation.

Hopefully, fantasy owners can remember a solid season from their respective Colt players and not only remember this unfortunate week to end the year.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Fifteen Notes:

Jerome Harrison & Joshua Cribbs Go Crazy

While Jerome Harrison had 34 carries for 286 yards rushing and two touchdown runs on the game. Harrison’s 286 yards rushing was one of the best single game rushing efforts in NFL history and broke the Browns all time record.

Look for Harrison to have another solid game next week against the Raiders as I’m sure the team will let him continue as the feature runner.

<img title="Cleveland Browns v Kansas City Chiefs - KANSAS CITY, MO - DECEMBER 20: Running back Jerome Harrison #35 of the Cleveland Browns outruns DaJuan Morgan #38 of the Kansas City Chiefs during the game on December 20, 2009 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kick returner Joshua Cribbs had another solid game for his team as well with two kickoff returns for touchdowns as well.

Cribbs is the best return man in football and in this game he had his best return game of his career.

Look for the Browns to continue their solid end of the season next week against the Raiders.

Matt Moore and Steve Smith Are Building a Connection

This has been a very bad fantasy football season for Steve Smith, but truthfully it was easy to see that it wasn’t his fault. Jake Delhomme is washed up and head coach John Fox is too loyal to bench Delhomme until he suffered an injury a few weeks ago.

Since Delhomme has been absent, Smith’s fantasy value has come back to life and tonight was a huge game for the star receiver. In this game Smith had nine receptions for 157 yards receiving and a 42-yard touchdown catch.

Smith almost had a 50-yard touchdown as well, but he was tackled inside the five yard line.

It looks like the Panthers have themselves a good young quarterback in Matt Moore, and he has made Smith a valuable fantasy receiver once again.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Fourteen Notes:

Brandon Marshall Breaks Record

The Broncos star receiver Brandon Marshall set an NFL record with 21 receptions in a single game. In the process of catching all those passes Marshall racked up 200 yards receiving and two touchdown catches.

<img style="width: 176px; height: 198px;" title="Broncos' Marshall Escapes Colts Brackett - Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall (15) breaks away from Indianapolis Colts linebacker Gary Brackett (58) during the fourth quarter at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis on December 13, 2009.
In the end, Marshall’s performance wasn’t enough to help his team win, but it was a huge game for fantasy football. Especially PPR fantasy football leagues that give one point per reception.

This was the kind of performance that helped many fantasy football teams win in the first week of fantasy playoffs.

It is clear to see that Marshall will be just fine in Denver with Orton at quarterback and will no doubt be a top ten fantasy receiver going into next year.

Chris Johnson Fantasy Football MVP

There is just no doubt about it, Chris Johnson is the fantasy football MVP in all fantasy leagues this year and will be the top pick in all fantasy football leagues next year. This running back is by far the most dangerous player in all of fantasy football.

Johnson can score from anywhere on a football field and do it in the running game and the receiving game.

<img style="width: 254px; height: 166px;" title="St. Louis Rams v Tennessee Titans - NASHVILLE, TN - DECEMBER 13: Chris Johnson #28 of the Tennessee Titans runs with the football against the St. Louis Rams at LP Field on December 13, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee.

In this contest Johnson had one of his best games of the season as he had 117 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns. Johnson also had three receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown on the passing game.

This fabulous performance helped carry fantasy teams that may not be that great (besides having Johnson) win this week in fantasy football.

Look for Johnson to continue his great playing ways as we head down the final weeks of the fantasy season.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Thirteen Notes:

Bruce Gradkowski the Right Man

The Raiders have waffled in obscurity with Jamarcus Russell under center but since Bruce Gradkowski has taken over he’s led the team to victories.

Two weeks ago Gradkowski led the Raiders to a come from behind victory over the Bengals in Oakland. This week Gradkowski beat the Steelers on the road with over 300 yards passing and three touchdown passes.

This performance just goes to show that a the Raiders have been in serious need of a quarterback that can keep the team in the game and make a crucial drive to win a game.

Gradkowski will be the starting quarterback to finish out the season and for my money, he should at least be the starter to begin next year as well. No doubt Gradkowski has at least earned his way into being a quality backup quarterback in the NFL for years to come.

Jonathan Stewart Runs Well

In a great matchup for fantasy owners Stewart ran the football 26 times for 120 yards and a touchdown score. The touchdown for Stewart marked the only TD the Panthers had for the entire game as they converted three field goals other than that.

With this performance by Stewart, it is clear to see that he is fully capable of being a fantasy stud if given a chance to be the full time starter.

Unfortunately, for Stewart, Williams has stayed healthy for the last couple years until this particular week.

We will have to find out if Williams will be available for next week still, but I would be surprised if he is out. Look for Stewart to be a great fantasy play next week if Williams is, in fact, out for that game.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Twelve Notes:

Brandon Jacobs: A Huge Disappointment

Hopefully, this season doesn’t mark the end of a short stay in the top twenty fantasy football running backs for Brandon Jacobs. This season only marks the third year that Jacobs has been the starting tailback for the Giants and fantasy owners have been very disappointed in this big backs performance.

Coming into this season Jacobs was a clear top twelve fantasy running back after he had a big year in 2008.

Sure, Jacobs missed three games last year and has always been a little injury prone, but you could count on him to have some big rushing days and always score touchdowns. Those expectations were backed by his four games with over 100 yards and 15 touchdowns from a year ago.

This year through week twelve of the fantasy football season Jacobs has zero 100 yard games and only three touchdown scores.

Because of his lack of production the Giants were rolled over by the Broncos and have lost five of their last six games.

If Jacobs can’t turn his season around, I fully expect the Giants to miss the playoffs this season.

From a fantasy perspective, I wouldn’t recommend starting this runner until he starts showing signs of playing the way his is capable.

For the third game in a row, Seahawks second year running back Justin Forsett has had a solid fantasy football week. In this game he shredded the Rams defense for big plays and touchdowns in a win for Seattle.

Taking Over

Forsett has had a tough go to get into the starting lineup in the NFL as even the Seahawks released him after the preseason last year. After a short stay with the Colts, Forsett came back to the Seahawks and handled special team’s duties at the end of the year.

This season Forsett has played strong all year but until three weeks ago he was mostly used as a special teamer and a third down back.

Upon Julius Jones’s injury against the Cardinals, Forsett has played very well for three straight weeks now.

Every week Forsett has had at least one touchdown and in two of those games he has over 120 yards rushing. As long as Jones is out because of health reasons, Forsett will make for a solid fantasy play.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Eleven Notes:

Ricky Williams a Top Ten Fantasy Football Running Back

Now that Brown is out of the way, Williams can turn up his fantasy production into high gear for the rest of the season. Tonight on short rest (Thursday game) Williams ran the football 22 times for 119 yards and two rushing scores.

Running wasn’t the only part of Williams game as he had two receptions for 19 yards and a touchdown in the passing game.

Not only did Williams put the numbers up, but he took snaps out of the quarterback position for the wildcat offense.

Look for Williams to continue his surge of fantasy football production next week against the Buffalo Bills horrible run defense.

Browns Down and Out….Really?

If you just went by this week alone and looked at the stats from the Cleveland Browns you wouldn’t know they are one of the worst offenses in football.

<img style="width: 206px; height: 155px;" title="Cleveland Browns v Detroit Lions - DETROIT, MI - NOVEMBER 22: Brady Quinn #10 of the Cleveland Browns looks to pass the football to Michael Gaines #86 against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on November 22, 2009 in Detroit, Michigan.

In this contest, the Browns young quarterback Quinn threw for over 300 yards passing and four touchdowns. He would have led his team to victory if it wasn’t for Stafford throwing a touchdown pass with no time left on the clock.

Rookie wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi benefited from Quinn’s strong game for 115 yards and a long bomb touchdown.

This was a very nice game for the Browns, but I wouldn’t expect them to have many strong games the rest of the season.

Stafford Leads Lions to Victory on Injured Shoulder

Everyone associated with the Detroit Lions should feel good about the performance of young rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford. Today Stafford threw the football for 422 yards passing and five touchdown passes.

Not only did Stafford have a strong game but his final touchdown was thrown on a very bad shoulder. The play before the game winning touchdown Stafford was driven into the ground by a Browns’ defender and injured his throwing shoulder.

This was an effort that showed everyone in the Lions’ organization that Stafford is committed to winning football games.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Ten Notes:

Rice and Peterson Dominate

It’s time to say that Sidney Rice is the true No. 1 receiver for the Vikings this season. The third year receiver is having a breakout season, and today he caught seven passes for 201 yards. This now gives Rice 786 yards receiving on the season already.

Start Rice every week from here on out and expect him to help you the rest of the way. Rice is a solid No.2 receiver for fantasy football teams going forward.

<img style="width: 262px; height: 183px;" title="Vikings vs. Lions - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (28) ran for a touchdown against the Detroit Lions in second-quarter action at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sunday, November 15, 2009.
Running back Adrian Peterson got things going this week as he posted 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Fantasy owners wanted to see Peterson get his production going again as he had a slow couple weeks against the Steelers and Packers.

Look for Peterson to put up a huge second half of the season and lead teams to the fantasy football playoffs.

Johnson goes for 100/100 Game

In this contest Chris Johnson put together another massive day as he had 132 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving.

On the ground Johnson had 26 carries for the 132 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. In the passing game Johnson had nine receptions for 100 yards.

This performance is the reason why Johnson will be the number one pick in many fantasy football leagues next year. His production is just too solid to ignore as he has the best skill set overall for fantasy owners.

Look for Johnson to continue his strong season as he helps fantasy owners win games and take them to the playoffs.

<img style="width: 175px; height: 215px;" title="Philadelphia Eagles v San Diego Chargers - SAN DIEGO - NOVEMBER 15: LaDainian Tomlinson #21 of the San Diego Chargers celebrates his rushing touchdown against Philadelphia Eagles during the NFL football game at Qualcomm Stadium on November 15, 2009 in San Diego, California.
LT’s Not Done Yet

This past week I wrote a column saying LaDainian Tomlinson was washed up and done as a fantasy football running back. I considered him to be nothing more than a flex play for the rest of the season and I felt the Chargers would let him go at year’s end.

Today Tomlinson had a much better game than we’ve seen from him this entire season as he had two touchdowns and 96 yards on the ground.

Unless this game marks a 180 degree turnaround for Tomlinson I would suspect that he may have games like this from time to time. Beyond that don’t be surprised if he has some bad games as well.

Standing atop the highlights for week nine in fantasy football has to be the reemergence of stud running back Michael Turner. In the past two weeks Turner has a yards per carry of over eight yards.
Not to mention that he has racked up over 300 yards rushing in those games and has three touchdowns.

Before this surge, it looked like Turner was going to be a bust for as high as fantasy football owners drafted him. Now, he looks like his old self and is ready to have a very strong second half of the season.

Below I have some observations from the ninth week of the regular season and how I see those points of interest playing out from a fantasy perspective.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Nine Notes:

Failure to Launch

The stats for Peyton Manning don’t look that bad as he did have 50 passing attempts for 318 yards and a touchdown score.

However, Manning has lost the killer instinct that he had early in the season as he’s now only thrown one touchdown pass in that past two weeks.

<img style="width: 230px; height: 151px;" title="Houston Texans v Indianapolis Colts - INDIANAPOLIS - NOVEMBER 08: Dallas Clark #44 of the Indianapolis Colts runs with the ball during the NFL game against the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 8, 2009 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

For the game Manning found his star tight end Dallas Clark up and down the field for 14 catches and 119 yards. While this was a great effort from Clark, fantasy owners want to see Clark stick one or two of those into the end zone.

Hopefully, the Colts will get back to their stellar play next week when the New England Patriots come to town.

Cedric Benson Runs Hard

This season has been a great one for fantasy football owners with Cedric Benson on their team(s).

The last time Benson played the Ravens, he posted the first 100 yard rushing game against their defense in years. This time around one had to believe that the Ravens would be ready for Benson and not allow him to go over the century mark twice.

By games end Benson posted 34 carries for 117 yards rushing and a touchdown run. The Bengals road Benson for their second win against the Ravens and their 4th win in the division.

The Bengals are still atop the division as they get ready for the Steelers next week . If they can win that game, they will have swept the Steelers and Ravens for the season.

Randy Moss Big Down the Stretch

In the middle of the third quarter both teams were tied 17 all but that was until Tom Brady found Moss.

Close to the end of the quarter Moss caught a pass and put a stiff arm on a defender and took the play to the house. The touchdown went for 71 yards and helped the Patriots take control of the game.

For the game Moss had six catches for 147 yards and the score.

Next week the Patriots will go to Indianapolis and will play against he rival Colts on Sunday night football. Get for fantasy players in for this one as it should be a great game.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Eight Notes:

MJD and Chris Johnson Run Wild

Titans star runner Chris Johnson and Jaguars star runner Maurice Jones-Drew both had huge performances in this game.

Johnson totaled 24 carries for 228 yards rushing and the two touchdowns. This was a big game for a running back that had not accomplished much for fantasy owners since his huge game against the Texans week two.

Johnson ran his team to their first victory and looks primed to have a big second half of the fantasy football season.

Jones-Drew had 177 yards rushing on only eight carries for the entire game. The two touchdown runs were of distances of 79 yards and 80 yards.

Drew is fast becoming a top three pick for next year’s fantasy football drafts as he is proving he can handle the feature duties in Jacksonville.

The only thing we need to see from Drew now is if he can finish the season strong and hold up physically. If he continues to produce like he did today with only eight carries than he will do just fine.

Donovan McNabb has Great Game

The Eagles pro bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb came out firing as he torched the Giants secondary for three touchdowns on the day.

<img style="width: 234px; height: 158px;" title="New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles - PHILADELPHIA - NOVEMBER 01: DeSean Jackson #10 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates his second quarter touchdown against the New York Giants on November 1, 2009 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

McNabb has been helped by emerging stars in receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Brent Celek. Both pass catchers are having fabulous seasons and should be started every week.

Another receiver that is coming on of late is rookie Jeremy Maclin. Maclin may not be an every week starter, but he will have games like this week where he posts a big touchdown score.

All these weapons give McNabb the tools he needs to be an explosive fantasy football quarterback for your team.

Look for the Eagles to be the front runners for the division title as they make a strong run for a Super Bowl appearance.

49ers Impress On All Fronts

The 49ers may have dropped their third game in a row, but it is clear to see that this team is much improved over years past.

Quarterback Alex Smith is taking strides to actually becoming the quality quarterback the 49ers drafted him to be.

<img style="width: 253px; height: 179px;" title="San Francisco 49ers v Indianapolis Colts - INDIANAPOLIS - NOVEMBER 01: Frank Gore #21 of the San Francisco 49ers runs for a touchdown during the NFL game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 1, 2009 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Smith’s number wouldn’t blow you away, but he did have 199 yards passing and found his favorite target in Vernon Davis for a touchdown.

Michael Crabtree had another strong performance as he totaled six receptions for 81 yards receiving. At this time, Crabtree is worth starting in PPR fantasy football leagues as he is a reception beast.

Frank Gore got things going again with a nice 64-yard touchdown run early in the game. Look for Gore to continue to stay hot as we move ahead as he now seems to be fully healthy from his ankle issue.

The 49ers defense did a great job of applying pressure on Manning for the entire game. Manning was sacked only two times this entire season coming into this game. By games end the 49ers sacked Manning a total of three times and pressured him all day long.

Look for the 49ers to give the Cardinals all they can handle for the NFC Western Division title.
