Last week was definitely a weird one in the world of fantasy football. Players like Bernard Scott and Jason Snelling came out of the wood work and helped fantasy owners win crucial games down the stretch of the season.

We even saw a flash from the past as players like Ricky Williams and Chris Chambers help lead their teams to victory.

Below we have a short right up on the top ten teams on our power rankings for this season. These teams are important to know as they are playing well and should continue to help fantasy teams.

Furthermore, pay attention to the worst teams on the list as they are the teams you want to have your players going against down the stretch.

1. Colts (10-0)

The Colts made it out of Baltimore with another victory but just barely as they won the game 17 to 15. This up coming week the Colts will travel to Houston to take on the Texans. The last time these two teams played in Indianapolis the Colts won a close game.

Look for the Texans to give the Colts everything they can handle, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they win.

2. Saints (10-0)

The Saints beat the Buccaneers for their tenth win of the season. Next week they will play the Patriots on Monday night, and I believe they will lose that game.

Fortunately the Saints will get back key players on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Drew Brees should have a huge fantasy football scoring day against the Patriots as the game will be a scoring extravaganza.

3. Vikings (9-1)

If it wasn’t for the Saints and Colts being undefeated the Vikings would be on the top of our list of the power rankings. This team is strong in just about every category and this team should have home field advantage in the NFC when the regular season is over.

With Brett Favre playing on top of his game and Adrian Peterson in the backfield the Vikings should roll to the super bowl.

4. Patriots (7-3)

The Patriots bounced back strong after losing to the Colts at the last minute. This week they should put up a big scoring game against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

Look for Brady, Moss and Welker to have big days as the Patriots need to put up a lot of points to win in New Orleans.

5. Chargers (7-3)

Since losing to the Broncos in week six the Chargers have won their last five games. Just when you thought this team was down for the count with a bad offensive line, a defense that couldn’t stop the run and LT not playing up to his standards, they turn it all around.

Expect the Chargers to win the AFC West and probably finish in the AFC with the third or fourth best record.

6. Bengals (7-3)

After two big division wins the Bengals dropped a disappointing game to the Raiders in Oakland. This week they will come back home and play their final game in their division for the regular season against the Browns.

Look for Bernard Scott to continue as the starting tail back if Cedric Benson is out for this week. Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco should have strong games.

7. Cardinals (7-3)

The Cardinals are moving past the Cowboys in our NFL power rankings more because Dallas has played that bad than the Cardinals have played that good. Last week the Cardinals held on to beat the Rams without Kurt Warner, but it wasn’t pretty.

It looks like Warner will be a go this week against the Titans and that is good because they wouldn’t win this game without him.

8. Cowboys (7-3)

This season has been a major up and down year for the Cowboys’ passing game. All of a sudden, defense are putting their top corner on Miles Austin, and he is having problems beating coverage.

If the Cowboys’ struggle on Thanksgiving against the Raiders I wouldn’t be surprised.

9. Steelers (6-4)

The Steelers lost a gimmy game against the Chiefs and one has to think it’s because they failed to dominate in the running game. Rashard Mendenhall is a capable running back but if the Steelers don’t start showing a need to run the ball they will lose more games like this past week to the Chiefs.

Sooner or later the Steelers will have to run the ball to either keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy or because Roethlisberger is knock out and injured.

10. Eagles (6-4)

The Eagles make it back to the top ten teams on our NFL power rankings because the Broncos are backsliding into outer space.

This past week the Eagles won a hard hitting road game and proved they could run the football when they needed to. Running the ball is very important for all teams in the NFL and now that the Eagles have shown success under pressure it should help open up the deep ball again.

The Vikings put the Lions away early in the fourth quarter as Brett Favre threw for over 340 yards passing. Not only did Favre have a strong game but Sidney Rice and Adrian Peterson had big games.

Rice and Peterson Dominate

It’s time to say that Sidney Rice is the true No. 1 receiver for the Vikings this season. The third year receiver is having a breakout season, and today he caught seven passes for 201 yards. This now gives Rice 786 yards receiving on the season already.

Start Rice every week from here on out and expect him to help you the rest of the way. Rice is a solid No.2 receiver for fantasy football teams going forward.

Running back Adrian Peterson got things going this week as he posted 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Fantasy owners wanted to see Peterson get his production going again as he had a slow couple weeks against the Steelers and Packers.

Look for Peterson to put up a huge second half of the season and lead teams to the fantasy football playoffs.

Stafford and Johnson Look Off

Rookie Quarterback Matthew Stafford had one nice drive for a touchdown pass but that was about it in this one. Most of the game Stafford was harassed by the Vikings and was hit often after his throws.

Calvin Johnson had a better game statistically than last week against the Seahawks but he clearly looks out of rhythm right now.

Next week the Lions will face the Cleveland Browns, and I expect Johnson and Stafford to have much more success in that game.

1. Saints (8-0)

Drew Brees and the Saints are still winning ball games but the last three weeks they’ve been close to losing.

Looking past this teams recent struggles it is easy to see they are vastly improved from last year. The big turnaround for this team is when they picked up defensive coordinator Greg Williams.

His impact on the defense has given them respectability on that side of the football. Not to mention fantasy football relevance.

2. Colts (8-0)

Peyton Manning and the Colts’ offense have slowed down in touchdown production the past two weeks. If they have any shot of staying undefeated this week against the Patriots, they will need to turn up the point scoring once again.

3. Vikings (7-1)

Brett Favre has made a major impact on this team as they now have balance on offense and as a team. With Favre at the helm forgotten receivers like Sidney Rice have come out of the wood work and become fantasy starting players.

As long as Favre continues to stay healthy this team will continue to roll and could be atop the NFL power rankings soon.

4. Patriots (6-2)

The Patriots’ offense has come on strong in the past three games and Tom Brady is looking better all the time. If the Colts continue their struggles in scoring offense than I fully expect the Patriots to win this weekend.

Going forward I wouldn’t be surprised if the Patriots’ defense gets stronger and the end up in the Super Bowl.

5. Steelers (6-2)

Sure the Bengals are 6 and 2 and have beaten the Steelers this year, but I’m still going with the champs. The Steelers proved on Monday night against the Broncos why they are still one of the best teams in football.

With the emergence of Rashard Mendenhall in the running game the Steelers can now lean on the running game when they need to. I expect them to win this weekend against the Bengals.

6. Bengals (6-2)

This season has been a pleasant surprise for the Bengals. With Cedric Benson doing his best Rudi Johnson impersonation and the defense emerging this team is ready for the playoffs.

Cincinnati has already beaten the Ravens twice this season and beat the Steelers. This week they play the Steelers in Pittsburgh, and I expect the Bengals to lose. If the Bengals do, in fact, win, they will be the clear favorite to win the AFC North.

7. Broncos (6-2)

The past two weeks have been tough for the once undefeated Denver Broncos. This weekend they should get healthy with a blowout win against the Redskins.

From a fantasy perspective, we need to see this team go down the field more often. Doing so with help fantasy football values of Kyle Orton, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler.

8. Cowboys (6-2)

If the Cowboys can put two road wins together this weekend against the Packers I will truly believe in their turnaround. As it stands right now Dallas is the favorite to win the NFC East as they are in first place.

Miles Austin has made a major impact on this team and will be a top 15 fantasy receiver coming into next year.

9. Falcons (5-3)

Having the Falcons ranked this high is very debatable, but I just believe they are the more balanced team of all the 5 and 3 teams. With Matt Ryan’s steady play in the passing game and Michael Turner’s re-emergence, this team is rolling.

10. Cardinals (5-3)

I would have the Eagles above the Cardinals if they prove to me, they can win without the big play in the air. For a team like the Eagles to drop a game to the Raiders is just not worthy of being in the top ten teams right now.

While the Cardinals haven’t run the ball great they have proven they can win on the road this season. Because of their undefeated record on the road and solid run defense, I’m willing to give them a pass for their loss to the Panthers.

This week was all about Brett Favre and his return to Lambeau field. Favre played an almost flawless game against his former team as he led the Vikings to victory with four touchdown passes.

Minnesota now has a commanding lead in the division and should steam roll their way to a division title. What the Vikings need to do now is win home field advantage over the undefeated New Orleans Saints.

Below I have some observations from the eighth week of the regular season and how I see those points of interest playing out from a fantasy perspective.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Eight Notes:

MJD and Chris Johnson Run Wild

Titans star runner Chris Johnson and Jaguars star runner Maurice Jones-Drew both had huge performances in this game.

Johnson totaled 24 carries for 228 yards rushing and the two touchdowns. This was a big game for a running back that had not accomplished much for fantasy owners since his huge game against the Texans week two.

Johnson ran his team to their first victory and looks primed to have a big second half of the fantasy football season.

Jones-Drew had 177 yards rushing on only eight carries for the entire game. The two touchdown runs were of distances of 79 yards and 80 yards.

Drew is fast becoming a top three pick for next year’s fantasy football drafts as he is proving he can handle the feature duties in Jacksonville.

The only thing we need to see from Drew now is if he can finish the season strong and hold up physically. If he continues to produce like he did today with only eight carries than he will do just fine.

Donovan McNabb has Great Game

The Eagles pro bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb came out firing as he torched the Giants secondary for three touchdowns on the day.

McNabb has been helped by emerging stars in receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Brent Celek. Both pass catchers are having fabulous seasons and should be started every week.

Another receiver that is coming on of late is rookie Jeremy Maclin. Maclin may not be an every week starter, but he will have games like this week where he posts a big touchdown score.

All these weapons give McNabb the tools he needs to be an explosive fantasy football quarterback for your team.

Look for the Eagles to be the front runners for the division title as they make a strong run for a Super Bowl appearance.

49ers Impress On All Fronts

The 49ers may have dropped their third game in a row, but it is clear to see that this team is much improved over years past.

Quarterback Alex Smith is taking strides to actually becoming the quality quarterback the 49ers drafted him to be.

Smith’s number wouldn’t blow you away, but he did have 199 yards passing and found his favorite target in Vernon Davis for a touchdown.

Michael Crabtree had another strong performance as he totaled six receptions for 81 yards receiving. At this time, Crabtree is worth starting in PPR fantasy football leagues as he is a reception beast.

Frank Gore got things going again with a nice 64-yard touchdown run early in the game. Look for Gore to continue to stay hot as we move ahead as he now seems to be fully healthy from his ankle issue.

The 49ers defense did a great job of applying pressure on Manning for the entire game. Manning was sacked only two times this entire season coming into this game. By games end the 49ers sacked Manning a total of three times and pressured him all day long.

Look for the 49ers to give the Cardinals all they can handle for the NFC Western Division title.

After all the hoopla and fan fair before this big contest, the Vikings and Packers faced off between the lines. Many thought that the Packers would give the Vikings a strong game as they were playing at home this time, and they had their safeties back and healthy.

In the end, Brett Favre and the Vikings were too much as Favre threw four touchdown passes and beat his old team for the second time this year.

Favre Has a Great Game

I didn’t think Favre would play a flawless game against his old team in Lambeau this week. Favre has always been an emotional player, and many times he comes into big games and has a tough time early on.

However, Favre didn’t have a slow start and was strong for the entire game. At the end of the day, Favre was 17 of 28 for 244 yards passing and four touchdown passes.

The Vikings now have a commanding lead in the NFC Central and should run away with the division and wrap it up early in December.

Favre truly makes this team better as he is the final piece of the puzzle for this strong team.

Look for the Vikings to be a major player in the post season this year.

Aaron Rodgers Not Good Enough

Part of Aaron Rodgers problems against the Vikings (and every week) is that he isn’t getting the greatest pass protection and is under lots of pressure.

While the offensive line has struggled this season, Rodgers hasn’t helped them much as he likes to hold onto the football.

Because he holds onto the ball a long time he will always take more sacks and hits by opposing defenses. Rodgers isn’t the only quarterback in football that plays this way as Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger does the exact same thing.

Because of this Rodgers will make more plays down the field, but he will also be an injury risk.

Greg Jennings Finally Produces

It’s been awhile since fantasy owners could feel good about the way Greg Jennings has performed on the football field. At times it almost seems that Jennings has been a forgotten target in this high octane offense.

Today Jennings had eight receptions for over 80 yards and a touchdown catch. Hopefully, Jennings can have a strong second half of the fantasy season and help fantasy owners to the playoffs.

This week was a very interesting one for players on the waiver wire and past players worth picking up. One receiver that everyone was talking about two weeks ago was Cowboys’ receiver Miles Austin.

This week we needed to see if Austin could produce as Tony Romo’s main man. For the game Austin had another fabulous stat line as he totaled over 170 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Austin is a true starter every week and is fast becoming one of the more dangerous fantasy receivers in the 2009 season.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Running Backs

Jets- Shonn Greene- Bye Week Nine

The time has come for Jets’ rookie running back Shonn Greene to be a fantasy football factor. Greene had been a non factor this year until Leon Washington went down with a broken fibula this past weekend.

Greene stepped in against the Raiders and did a heck of a job as he rumbled for 144 yards rushing and two scores.

Since Greene will now be Thomas Jones backup and will play every week you should pick him up in your league.

Cardinals- Chris “Beanie” Wells- Bye Week Four (Done)

Many fantasy football owners that drafted Chris “Beanie” Wells already gave up on him a few weeks ago. This past week Wells started to show why he is the better running back in Arizona with 67 yards rushing and a nice touchdown run.

For the game, Wells had 14 carries as Tim Hightower only had four. Look for Wells to slowly take more of a work load in the Cardinals’ offense.

Wells is at least worth holding onto for the fantasy playoffs in weeks 14 through 16. In those games, he plays the 49ers, Lions and Rams. This young man could do a lot of damage for your fantasy team in those weeks.

Wide Receivers

49ers- Michael Crabtree- Bye Week Six (Done)

I watched the 49ers – Texans’ game this weekend and was blown away by Michael Crabtree’s performance. Sure, he only had five catches for 56 yards, but he played nearly every snap on offense.

It is easy to see why Crabtree was a two time Fred Biletnikoff winner in college as he has a great pair of hands. On one play, he caught the back end of the football. To do something like that only shows that this youngster could be the real deal.

To see that Crabtree could play all the downs and play effectively, speaks volumes about what this kid was doing in his off time.

Crabtree may not be a fantasy starter right away, but he is no doubt worth holding onto.

Vikings- Sidney Rice- Bye Week Nine

I recommended Sidney Rice as a waiver pickup last week, and I’m doing it again. This kid is Brett Favre’s top target and is worth starting on your fantasy team. If you are in need of a receiver than this young man is a good option.

To start the fourth quarter of this game you would have thought that the Vikings were going to win this game. In the end, the Steelers had two defensive touchdowns late in the game and ended up winning.

Sidney Rice Continues Strong Play

Vikings third year wide receiver Sidney Rice had played strong for a month straight coming into this game. Last week Rice had over 150 yards receiving against the Ravens stingy defense and this week he posted 11 catches for 136 yards.

It’s time to say that Rice is the top receiver for Brett Favre in this offense as Bernard Berrian just hasn’t gotten it done.

Look for Rice on the waiver wire and pick him up fast if he is still available.

Mike Wallace Who?

Steelers rookie receiver Mike Wallace is quietly having a very good season as the Steelers No.3 receiver. For five weeks in a row Wallace has had at least 47 yards receiving in every game and two of the last three he has a touchdown.

In this game Wallace was the beneficiary of Ben Roethlisberger’s only touchdown pass of the day. The touchdown was a 40-yard touchdown as Wallace made a nice catch and then made two defenders miss.

At this time, Wallace isn’t that bad of a waiver pickup if you can stash him away on your bench and hope Santonio Holmes or Hines Ward get hurt.

After last season, some in fantasy football circles thought that Vikings’ second year receiver Sidney Rice was a bust. This was because the South Carolina product had not accomplished much in his first two years.

Coming into this year Rice received a new lease on life when Brett Favre signed with the team. Finally, Rice would have a solid quarterback and would now have a chance to have fantasy football relevance.

In the first two games of the regular season, Favre was still getting his arm into shape and the Vikings’ passing game struggled.

By the end of Minnesota’s third game against the 49ers, Favre was officially back when he threw a game winning touchdown to Greg Lewis. In that very game, Favre hooked up with Rice on four receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Taking the Next Step

Against the Ravens, week six, Rice exploded for 176 yards receiving on six receptions. Beyond Rice’s solid production, Favre trusted Rice at the end of the game on their final drive to win.

On that drive Rice made a huge play on a deep route for 63 yards receiving.

Watching the chemistry that is developing between Favre and Rice reminds me of when Favre started hooking up with Greg Jennings in Green Bay.

Hopefully, Rice will be able to take the next step as Jennings did and produce consistent production. If he can take this next step he will be well on his way to becoming a top 25 receiver in fantasy football.

Fantasy Football Rankings for Sidney Rice

At this time, I highly recommend you consider picking up Rice off of your fantasy waiver wire. This talented young player is proving that he is much more than a No.2 receiver on this team and is quickly become a go to guy.

For Rice to be an every week fantasy football play he needs to continue to produce consistently. If Rice can show that then he will be a force down the stretch of the fantasy football season.

Minnesota Vikings top receiver Bernard Berrian was having a quiet season before last week against the Packers. Sure, he was collecting receptions before that game, but he wasn’t producing any big plays or touchdowns.

The two main reasons to attribute to Berrian’s slow start are for one he had a hamstring problem and Brett Favre was still getting in shape.

With both issues now in the rear view mirror, except Berrian to produce for fantasy football owners.

Big Week On Deck

This week the Vikings’ travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams’ poor defense. So far, the Rams’ defense is 19th against the pass and 27th in points given up.

With Favre now having his arm back in shape for the long ball, I expect the Vikings to feature some aerial opportunities to Berrian.

If the Vikings can make defenses respect the pass down the field, then it will make life easier for Adrian Peterson and the running game.

After this week, the Vikings will face a couple challenging matchups against the Ravens and Steelers. At first glance these games may look hard for Berrian but he is actually not that bad of a play.

If there is a weakness in either of these defenses it will be found in the passing game.

Bernard Berrian’s Fantasy Football Ranking

Berrian should be started in all fantasy football leagues at least for this week. If he has another strong showing then you might want to start him every week.

Defenses will always have to respect Peterson and that sets the table for Berrian down the field.

This season has not been a kind one to receivers once again, and if you can find consistent production, it is worth starting.

Brett Favre received his opportunity to beat his old team this week and the old man made the most of it. For the game Favre went 24-of-31 for 271 yards and three touchdown passes.

Watching the game tonight it was very apparent that Favre still has his strong arm as he zipped the football around the field. The Vikings are still undefeated, and they play the lonely Rams next week in St. Louis.

Look for No.4 to have another solid week and the Vikings to continue their perfect record next week.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Four Notes:

Slaton Benched

Steve Slaton got off to a horrible start in this game as the Raiders’ defense bottled him up and did not allow him much room. Not only did Slaton run to ineffectively but he fumbled the football for the fourth time this season and was benched after.

Seeing Slaton get benched was not surprising to me as he needs to stop fumbling the ball, but I was surprised to see who replaced him.

The Texans went to Ryan Moats instead of Slaton’s traditional backup Chris Brown. Not only did they go to Moats but Brown didn’t even play in the game.

Slaton Comes Back In a Big Way

After a series the Texans put Slaton back in the game, and he responded with a 32-yard touchdown run. Then on the next series he had a very nice 18-yard touchdown catch and run.

With Brown out of the game, the Texans kept Slaton in the game when they got inside the 10 yard line. If this continues, Slaton’s fantasy football ranking will increase as he will get goal line opportunities.

Hopefully, Slaton’s fumbling issues are behind him as fantasy football owners will need his production to make a championship run.

Brandon Marshall Puts the Game Away

Until the final drive of the game Brandon Marshall had been held in check. On that final drive, he made an unbelievable catch and run for a 51-yard touchdown score, that won the game for the Broncos.

This was the kind of play that makes people remember why a Marshall or a Terrell Owens is worth having on your football team. Beyond the drama that this type of player can bring, they also make the game winning plays like this one.

Marshall is officially back and healthy and should be in all fantasy football lineups moving forward.

Steelers Win Big Game, Mendenhall Runs Hard

Tonight the Steelers’ were desperate for a victory as they would fall to 1-3 if they lost. In the end, the Chargers made the game close but for most of the night it was the Steelers that dominated.

This performance was highlighted by second year runner Rashard Mendenhall as he stepped up big after being benched the week before.

Coming into the game Willie Parker was going to be out because of turf toe and Mendenhall got the call. Mendenhall answered as he had 29 rushes for 165 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

He even flashed some receiving skills with two receptions for 26 yards as well.
