This week’s waiver wire is headlined by wide receiver Chris Chambers. Chambers was released by the Chargers last week and then signed days later with the Chiefs.

I personally wondered if Chambers was done because he didn’t produce much in the Chargers passing game.

This past weekend Chambers proved other wise as he had two touchdowns and should help the Chiefs improve.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Quarterbacks

Titans- Vince Young

I suggested that fantasy owners grab Vince Young off the waiver wire last week, and I’m doing so again. The Titans have turned things around in the past two weeks and are starting to finally get their team healthy.

Young is progressing as a quarterback and has three talented receivers to throw to. He also has Chris Johnson out of the backfield and Young can still score on the ground.

Running Backs

Raiders- Darren McFadden

Many fantasy football owners have already given up on Raiders running back Darren McFadden and cut him weeks ago. This week McFadden is back at practice from his knee injury and is expected to start against the Chiefs.

As long as McFadden doesn’t have a setback this week in practice I would suggest you grab him off the waver wire. McFadden has had lots of success against the Chiefs in his first two years in the league.

Redskins- Ladell Betts

It is already being reported that Clinton Portis will likely miss this weekend’s game against the Broncos because of a concussion. This means backup Ladell Betts will get the starting job and is a sneaky one week play for fantasy owners.

Betts helped fantasy owners a few years ago in getting to the fantasy playoffs, and he had a respectable game last week against the Falcons. If you need a decent flex play option for this weekend you could do worse than Betts.

Wide Receivers

Chiefs- Chris Chambers

Last week was a busy one for wide receiver Chris Chambers. First he was released by the San Diego Chargers and then was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. On Sunday Chambers played his first game with the Chiefs and had three receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chiefs aren’t a very good team and will give up a good amount of points most weeks. This means the Chiefs will have to throw the football.

This week’s waiver wire pickups are all about bust franchise quarterback coming back and playing well. Vince Young and Alex Smith have had their share of problems in the past but now both have a new opportunity to prove themselves. Not only are both quarterbacks receiving an opportunity, but they are both producing for their teams. Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Quarterbacks

Titans- Vince Young

Now that Vince Young as the starting job and has a win under his belt it is safe to pick him up off the waiver wire. Young may not have that bad of a second half of the fantasy season if the head coach Jeff Fisher opens up the offense.

With receivers like Justin Gage, Nate Washington and Kenny Britt, Young now has good weapons in the receiving core. This is different than when Young used to be the quarterback in years past.

49ers- Alex Smith

Former top pick Alex Smith is back and looking better than ever before. Smith also has added fantasy value now that Vernon Davis is the stud tight end the 49ers drafted him to be a few years ago.

Not to also add that rookie Michael Crabtree appears to be the real deal as he followed up his good debut against the Texans with an eight catch performance last week.

If Smith can get his career started again it would be a very nice story.

Running Backs

Texans- Ryan Moats

Last week Steve Slaton went into the dog house for good as he fumbled once again in the first quarter against the Bills. This was the fifth game that Slaton had lost a fumble this season and head coach Gary Kubiak had seen enough.

After Slaton was benched Ryan Moats got into the game and had a great performance. For the game Moats had 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Moats may not be a starting fantasy football running back right now but fantasy owners should stash him away.

Chiefs- Jamaal Charles

Larry Johnson will be out for at least this week, and we will have to see if he retains his starting job when he comes back. For this week Jamaal Charles isn’t a bad play against the Jaguars’ defense that gave up two long touchdown runs and over 200 rushing yards to Chris Johnson.

Charles is a speedster like Johnson and can take it the distance if he finds a crease.

Raiders- Justin Fargas

While it’s hard to recommend anyone on the Raiders sorry offense for fantasy football, I do believe Justin Fargas has earned a roster spot. Darren McFadden won’t be back with the team for awhile and fellow runner Michael Bush has struggled.

In the past two weeks Fargas hasn’t run that bad and last week he plunged in a touchdown score. If you need a pinch starter, Fargas could be serviceable.

Wide Receivers

Chargers- Malcom Floyd

On Monday the Chargers released veteran wide receiver Chris Chambers and will now move Malcom Floyd into official starting line up. Floyd has been coming on in recent weeks and makes for a solid fantasy pickup.

49ers- Michael Crabtree

I recommended fantasy football owners grab Michael Crabtree up and stash him away last week. This week if you can still get Crabtree on your team, I suggest you nab him up right away.

This kid is the real deal, and he is worth starting in PPR fantasy leagues right now.

Tight Ends

Redskins- Fred Davis

After the Redskins past game against the Eagles it was reported that tight end Chris Cooley would be done for the season. Cooley now is saying that he thinks he might be able to play in a month.

While that may be wishful thinking, I do believe you should pickup Redskins new starting tight end Fred Davis as a replacement. Davis may not be a very good blocker, but he is a solid pass catcher.

We are already a quarter of the way done with the fantasy football season, and it’s amazing how fast the season goes. Players like Steve Slaton and Matt Forte finally broke lose and had big games for fantasy football owners.

At one point, I thought Slaton would end up being a bust as he was benched by his coach Gary Kubiak. Fortunately, Slaton was given another opportunity and had two big touchdowns.

This week I will be interested to see how Kurt Warner and the Cardinals play against the Texans. In their last contest against the Colts, Warner did not look good and the offense didn’t look sharp.

Hopefully, Arizona will come out and start playing like the team, we saw a season ago.

This week we have our weekly section on wounded warriors, as well as our top rankings for top position players. We have the top 16 ranked QB, TE, K and D/ST ranked. We also have the top 30 RB’s and top 40 WR’s as well.

Every week we will start off with our wounded warrior’s section. These are the key players that are on the injury report that you need to pay attention too before games begin.

Wounded Warriors

Eli Manning vs Raiders: We will have to find out if Eli Manning will play this week after he re-injured plantar fascia. Right now, if you have other options at quarterback you might want to bench Manning this week.

The Giants play the Raiders at home, and they should make easy work of them in this one. Look for New York to lean on their running game to get an easy win.

Correll Buckhaulter vs Patriots: If you have Knowshon Moreno it is time to make him a start this week. Correll Buckhaulter should be out for a week or two with a high ankle sprain. Look for Moreno to get the bulk of the work this week against the Patriots.

Darren McFadden @ Giants: Darren McFadden will be out the next 2-4 weeks with an injury. This week the Raiders play the Giants, and I really can’t recommend you start anyone from Oakland.

Willie Parker @ Lions: Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin expects Willie Parker to miss more time this week in practice. Parker has a turf toe injury and didn’t practice or play a week ago.

Look for Rashard Mendenhall to get the bulk of work, even if Parker does suit up for the game.

Roy E. Williams vs Chiefs: Unfortunately, for you fantasy football owners that still have Roy Williams on your team, he may not play this week. Williams is suffering from three damaged ribs from last week’s game.

This is one of Williams golden opportunities to shine for fantasy owners, so hopefully he can play this week.

Quarterbacks

Peyton Manning @ Titans

This week was a big one for fantasy football owners with Steve Slaton as their running back. The young runner had yet to have a strong week this season and this was a game he needed to step up and produce.

Slaton Benched

Slaton got off to a horrible start in this game as the Raiders’ defense bottled him up and did not allow him much room. Not only did Slaton run to ineffectively but he fumbled the football for the fourth time this season and was benched after.

Seeing Slaton get benched was not surprising to me as he needs to stop fumbling the ball, but I was surprised to see who replaced him.

The Texans went to Ryan Moats instead of Slaton’s traditional backup Chris Brown. Not only did they go to Moats but Brown didn’t even play in the game.

Slaton Comes Back In a Big Way

After a series the Texans put Slaton back in the game, and he responded with a 32-yard touchdown run. Then on the next series he had a very nice 18-yard touchdown catch and run.

With Brown out of the game, the Texans kept Slaton in the game when they got inside the 10 yard line. If this continues, Slaton’s fantasy football ranking will increase as he will get goal line opportunities.

Hopefully, Slaton’s fumbling issues are behind him as fantasy football owners will need his production to make a championship run.

Darren McFadden Goes Down

Not only did Darren McFadden have a horrible game, but he is going to miss up to four weeks with a torn meniscus. The Raiders need all their talented players healthy and having McFadden out won’t do the Raiders any favors.

Stay away from all Raider players for fantasy as they are a horrible team right now.

No one can deny that the Houston Texans offense has been a pass first attack for a few years now. Understanding this it is not surprising to see Matt Schaub’s passing attempts around the mid thirties every week.

Last Sunday, Texans went pass happy against the Jaguars, and in my opinion, they lost the football game because of it. This team would have been better served running a balanced attack with Steve Slaton on the ground as they would control the football and the clock.

The biggest problem the Texans have right now is that their defense is very susceptible giving up the big play to their opponent. This defense needs all the rest they can get because when on the field too long (like any defense) they are even more prone to giving up points.

If the Texans have any hope of making it to the playoffs in 2009, they will have to change their ways and fast.

A Reason to Believe

Unfortunately, for Slaton fantasy football owners, I believe head coach Gary Kubiak lost faith in his talented runner after the Titans’ game. In the first two games to the year Slaton had three fumbles and his coach was very critical of him in the press, leading up to their week three contest.

When Slaton was given an opportunity to produce, he had 76 yards rushing on only 12 carries. That is a sparkling 6.3 yards per carry average. What is just as important for Slaton is that he did not turn the football over in the game.

My main problem with the Texans’ coaching staff last week is that they didn’t continue to feed Slaton for at least 18 carries in the game.

Maurice Jones-Drew was carving the Texans’ defense up for dinner, and they really needed to keep the ball away from him and in their possession.

Things Need to Change

This week the Raiders come to town and the one thing they can do is run the football

with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.

Not only that but the Raiders are not bad against the pass, as they are 14th best defense in that area. They also do a fair job of keeping opponents out of the end zone with a 15th overall in that category.

One area this team is not statistically strong in is against the run, as they are 23rd overall.
If the Texans are smart they should ride Slaton and the running game, wearing down the Raiders’ defense.

Fantasy Football Ranking for Steve Slaton

It’s hard to say right now if Slaton will be able to produce the fantasy numbers he did last season. So far, he has been a major disappointment in any fantasy football league.

In his defense, he has played two top ten defenses against the run in the Titans and Jets. The other team he faced, as mentioned before, he had a nice 6.3 yard per carry average.

I believe he will have around 1,600 total yards from scrimmage as he has a good schedule to run against for the rest of the year. He’s also a very capable receiver with nine receptions for almost 100 yards receiving this year.

For Slaton to truly be worth the high fantasy football pick he was drafted to be, he will need to find the end zone.

Chris Brown is entrenched as the goal line back, but he did fumble the ball at the one yard line last week. That fumble cost the Texans the game and Kubiak may turn to Slaton if Brown should falter again.

Hopefully, that will be the case as I hate vulcher backs like Brown and how they take away another players hard earned touchdown.

Or, maybe I just hate Brown because I have Slaton on a couple of my fantasy teams.

For all that has been written about the Raiders first round receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, it’s been another rookie receiver that is producing. Fourth round pick Louis Murphy is now entrenched as the top receiver for the Raiders’ passing game.

At one point, I believed that Chaz Schilens would be the clear top receiver in this offense. Unfortunately, Schilens had a foot injury in preseason and will now be out until week four. Not only that but Schilens has admitted he will have to play in pain all year.

Producing Right Away

With Schilens aliment and Bey’s seemingly inability to catch the football, quarterback JaMarcus Russell has turned to Murphy. In Murphy’s first contest against the Chargers, he had four receptions and a touchdown.

On the touchdown score Murphy flashed his 4.4, 40 yards dash time by burning the defense from 57 yards out. Murphy also had another touchdown taken away, late in the first half. On that touchdown catch the league maintains Murphy didn’t have possession, but I respectfully disagree.

By the end of the game, fellow rookie Bey, didn’t even have a reception. If Bey can’t step it up in the next week or two, he will lose his starting job to Javon Walker or Schilens when they are ready to play.

Murphy, on the other hand, will continue to start on this team and may be their top receiver all yearlong. In some ways Murphy reminds me of Eddie Royal a season ago. He’s not a big guy, but at the same time he’s not small. He has good hands and has done a good job at handling the NFL’s speed of the game.

Fantasy Football Rankings for Raider Receivers

The Raiders should be a run heavy offense with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, leading the charge.

Bey has much to learn and right now he’s not going to help your fantasy team.

If Schilens can come back healthy and produce than I would suggest picking him up. Right now he’s not healthy enough to play, so we will have to see on his progress, moving forward.

Walker is a major wild card, as we just don’t know if he can ever be what he once was. It looks like he might be a go this week against the Chiefs. If he does anything worth noting I will update you on his status moving forward.

With all that said, grab Murphy off the waiver wire if you need another option. I wouldn’t recommend you start him every week, but he makes for a solid bye week fill in.

Week one of the fantasy football schedule is already behind us. Hopefully, your fantasy team got off to a good start to begin the year.

Wounded Warrior’s

Donovan McNabb vs Saints – McNabb has missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, so far this week. At this point in time, it looks like he will be a scratch. Even if he can play, the Eagles will probably run the ball and throw short passes.

Matt Cassel vs Raiders- Right now I hope you have a better option than Cassel on your team to start. However, he should make players like Dwayne Bowe more valuable, when he’s on the field.

At this point in time, it looks like Cassel may in fact play, so hopefully we can expect better production from Bowe and Larry Johnson.

Kyle Orton vs Browns- Orton is still wearing padded protection in his injured finger. Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall may suffer a bit, while Orton is recovering. At the same time, all three players should have opportunities for success this week.

LaDainian Tomlinson vs Ravens- Tomlinson has missed practice both days this week. Right now he is wearing a protective boot on his injured ankle. Even if LT does play this week he is a poor bet for production against Baltimore.

If you have other options to start, I would bench Tomlinson this week.

Pierre Thomas vs @ Eagles- Thomas has been practicing with a heavy knee brace and his status for this week is up in the air.

Thomas did say on his twitter that he is ready to go for this week. This is a good sign, but even if he does it will probably be in a limited role.

Antonio Bryant vs @ Bills- Bryant makes for a bad play this week as he is still recovering from knee surgery. Last week he pulled himself out of the game. Look for other options this week.

Anquan Boldin vs @ Jaguars- Boldin said his hamstring is much better than last week, but it is still not 100%. Unless you have a deep receiving core, I would suggest you keep Boldin in the lineup.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh vs @ 49ers- Housh is listed as probable this week with back and rib issues. He should be fine for the game as the Seahawks and 49ers fight for first place in the division.

Brandon Marshall vs Browns- Marshall is not listed on the injury report. This is a good sign, but he will still need some time to get into playing shape. If you have good depth you might consider benching him until he proves he’s back.

Jeremy Shockey vs @ Eagles- Shockey was limited on Thursday’s practice with an ankle issue. However, he is not expected to miss the game and should be a decent start this week.

Quarterback

We all have it planned out so perfectly. That perfect team that we will never need to drop any player and will win our fantasy league. Then suddenly that young rising star on your team like Anthony Gonzalez goes down, and you scramble to fix your team.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Quarterbacks:

Bills- Trent Edwards – Bye Week 9

On Monday Night the Bills offensive line did a great job of protecting Trent Edwards. If they can continue this protection, Edwards will be a serviceable backup quarterback for your fantasy football team.

Running Backs:

Buccaneers- Carnell “Cadillac” Williams- Bye Week 8

Cadillac Williams had a strong first game against the Cowboys. Right now Williams is in a committee, but he is the starter. In fantasy football any time, a player is a starter, they are fantasy worthy.

Look for Williams as a nice bye week fill in player at this time.

Raiders- Michael Bush – Bye Week 9

Darren McFadden went in the top five round of many fantasy drafts. However, Michael Bush may have more fantasy value if he continues to get goal line touchdowns. Bush makes for a good stash away player at this point. If McFadden should get hurt, he might be fantasy football starting worthy.

Ravens- Willis McGahee- Bye Week 7

Ray Rice may get all the headlines but Willis McGahee got two touchdowns in week one. Rice did not have a touchdown all of last year, and it looks like they will use McGahee and Le’Ron McClain again this year.

If you are desperate for depth, you could do much worse than McGahee. Let’s hope the knee holds up.

Saints- Mike Bell- Bye Week 5

Until Pierre Thomas comes back from his knee problem, the Saints will use Mike Bell to run. Unfortunately, Bell faces the Eagles, Bills and Jets the next three weeks.

As long as Thomas is out, Bell hold value, but I wouldn’t start him, unless you are desperate.

Wide Receivers:

Cowboys- Patrick Crayton- Bye Week 6

This is my top waiver pickup for week two as the Patrick Crayton is a starter in Dallas. Tony Romo looks primed to show he can succeed without Terrell Owens. In his mission for success, Crayton will benefit as well.

Colts- Pierre Garcon- Bye Week 6

Now that Anthony Gonzalez is out for awhile, Pierre Garcon looks to start. Any starting receiver with Peyton Manning is fantasy worthy, so look in into Garcon this week. I wouldn’t start him right away, but if he should start producing then start him during bye weeks.

Titans- Justin Gage- Bye Week 7

Look for Justin Gage as a nice depth player at this time. If the Titans throw the ball as they did against the Steelers than Gage is a fantasy starter.

My main concern for Gage is if he can still produce when Nate Washington is fully healthy.

Seahawks- Nate Burlson- Bye Week 7

It’s amazing but in week one I actually played against Nate Burlson, in one of my fantasy leagues. At first I laughed about Burlson being in a fantasy lineup, but he showed me by catching seven balls and scoring.

Right now Deion Branch just can’t stay healthy, so look for Burlson as a nice depth receiver for your team.

Raiders- Louis Murphy- Bye Week 9

Unless Chaz Schilens can come back healthy, Louis Murphy is primed to be the top receiver in Oakland. Tom Cable has raved about Murphy all summer and against the Chargers, Murphy looked good.

Except Murphy to produce good games throughout the season as he is a decent bye week fill in at this point.

Tight Ends:

Patriots- Ben Watson- Bye Week 8

If Ben Watson happens to be sitting out there on your waiver wires, he makes for an excellent pickup. If your team is weak at the tight end than I would recommend you pick Watson up and start him every week.

49ers- Vernon Davis- Bye Week 6

Yes, it’s that time again to talk about Vernon Davis. The 49ers only good drive came when they got the ball to Davis. Look for the 49ers to continue looking his way for offensive production.

Just like the Patriots vs Bills game, the Chargers were supposed to blow out the Raiders, on Monday Night. However, the Raiders gave the Chargers all they could handle, until they lost the game at the end.

LT Fading?

This off season much had been made about LaDainian Tomlinson and if the game had passed him by. Through the spring and summer, I was on board with Tomlinson have a strong comeback. When the preseason came along, I was concerned about how I saw him run the ball.

My opinion on Tomlinson changed completely when Norv Turner held LT out of the third preseason game. Turner noted that Tomlinson was not injured, but he did say he was concerned about him running on turf.

Last year Tomlinson played on turf toe all year, and I was concerned if he did long term damaged to the toe. When he was held out because Turner was “concerned” I believed the toe was still a problem.

In Monday nights game Tomlinson only carried the ball 13 times, and he rolled his ankle in the first half.

This led to Darren Sproles playing full time at the end of the game when the Chargers were making their comeback.

Tomlinson is in no way the best running back in football anymore. At this time, he should be considered a decent No.2 back for your fantasy team.

Michael Bush Runs Hard

Running backs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush ran the football well all night. Unfortunately, for fantasy owners with McFadden, it looks like Bush will split time.

What hurts McFadden’s fantasy value most is that the Raiders gave Bush the football at the goal line. If Bush continues to receive the carries inside the five, then he may have more fantasy value than McFadden.

Louis Murphy Looks Good

If you are looking for a receiver to pick up this week, Raiders’ rookie Louis Murphy is a decent option. Tonight Murphy had four catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. Murphy also had another touchdown taken away on a bad call.

If Chaz Schilens cannot come back healthy from his foot problem then look for Murphy to be JaMarcus Russell’s top receiver all year.

Here we go again with another wild year of fantasy football now upon us. It’s time for all those great players on the draft day to either put up or go down into the fantasy gutter for 2009.

This week we at fantasy-info.com will only have our weekly section on wounded warriors. In the coming weeks we will have a more in depth listing but not for week one.

The reason for this is that we firmly believe that for the most part you should start the players you drafted to start. This means that if you drafted Darren McFadden (plays the Chargers) as a starter, you should play him over Julius Jones (plays the Rams) this week.

Last year, yours truly went away from this rule of thumb and started Thomas Jones over Reggie Bush. While Jones did have a good game against the Dolphins, Bush had a huge day against the Buccaneers.

Wounded Warriors

Tom Brady vs Bills – Brady should be fine for the Monday night game in New England. Look for this stud quarterback to light up the Bills’ defense.

Matt Cassel vs @ Ravens -Cassel may not miss this game with a bad knee, but he should. If the Chiefs are smart they will hold him out of this one. If he does play than Ray Lewis and the boys could give him a knockout blow.

Pierre Thomas vs Lions – Thomas is looking very unlikely to play in this one. In practice, he has been seen limping around and favoring his knee. It’s a shame that he probably won’t play as he faces the Lions poor defense.

Maurice Jones-Drew vs Colts- Fantasy owners got a scare last week when Drew went down against the Redskins. Look for Drew to be a go this weekend and have a fine game.

Bernard Berrian vs @ Browns- Berrian injured his hamstring in the Vikings first preseason game. Since that time, he has missed the rest of the preseason but did start practicing last week.

Hopefully he will be a go this weekend as he has a great matchup against the Browns shaky secondary.

Donnie Avery vs Seahawks – Avery had a bad foot early in camp but did suit up last week. He should be a go and play well against the Seahawks patch work secondary.
