In the second half of Thanksgiving predictability the Cowboys won another easy game against a bad football team on national television. I’m not sure who schedules the Cowboys’ game on Turkey day, but they must like to see Dallas blast an easy opponent.

Miles Austin Produces

The Cowboys’ star receiver Miles Austin has had a few quiet games of late but in this game the Raiders did him a favor by not using Nnamdi Asomugha against him most of the time. The Raiders tend to use Asomugha on one side of the field most of the time (very dumb idea) and the Cowboys were actually smart enough to put Austin away from him.

This mismatch allowed Austin to burn up the Raiders secondary for seven catches for 145 yards and a touchdown.

While this was a nice game to see from Austin, I would still expect him to struggle when a team lines their top corner on him all day. He has had trouble beating top coverage for big days and that will probably continue more often than not.

Running the Rock

What was refreshing to see from Dallas was their running game burned the Raiders for huge runs. Most of the big plays were from Tashard Choice and Felix Jones as Oakland bottled up Marion Barber most of the game.

Seeing Barber struggle isn’t that surprising against the Raiders as they tend to stop bigger sized running backs. Their horrible weakness in the run game is against small, shifty backs like Choice and Jones.

If the Cowboys can run like this in December, they will win their division and should win at least on playoff game.

Bruce Gradkowski to Darrius Heyward-Bey

One connection the Raiders’ organization is hoping will pay off more is when new quarterback Bruce Gradkowski can hit Darrius Heyward-Bey for a touchdown like he did in this game.

Heyward-Bey will always be compared to fellow Bay Area rookie receiver Michael Crabtree because Bey was drafted before the ultra talented star from Texans Tech.

So far, Bey has been a horrible failure when compared to what Crabtree has done for the San Francisco 49ers this year. Heck even if Crabtree wasn’t having a good year (or wasn’t on a team still) Bey would be a disappointment anyway.

This young receiver needs to go out in the offseason and catch a million balls to make his hands at least average for the pro game. Too many times Bey has dropped key passes that have hurt his team and made him look bad.

You could easily say that Bey isn’t even the best rookie receiver on his own team as Louis Murphey has put together a decent year for the Raiders.

For the future, I haven’t given up hope on Bey because he still has great talent. At the same time, he may need another year to mature and grow until his is ready.

Look for Bey to be a dangerous late round pick in two years when he walks into his third year as a fantasy football receiver. That season in many receivers bust out and put it together.

Just look at this years third year men like Sidney Rice, Mike Sims-Walker and Steve Smith out of New York.

This week’s waiver wire pickups are all about bust franchise quarterback coming back and playing well. Vince Young and Alex Smith have had their share of problems in the past but now both have a new opportunity to prove themselves. Not only are both quarterbacks receiving an opportunity, but they are both producing for their teams. Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Quarterbacks

Titans- Vince Young

Now that Vince Young as the starting job and has a win under his belt it is safe to pick him up off the waiver wire. Young may not have that bad of a second half of the fantasy season if the head coach Jeff Fisher opens up the offense.

With receivers like Justin Gage, Nate Washington and Kenny Britt, Young now has good weapons in the receiving core. This is different than when Young used to be the quarterback in years past.

49ers- Alex Smith

Former top pick Alex Smith is back and looking better than ever before. Smith also has added fantasy value now that Vernon Davis is the stud tight end the 49ers drafted him to be a few years ago.

Not to also add that rookie Michael Crabtree appears to be the real deal as he followed up his good debut against the Texans with an eight catch performance last week.

If Smith can get his career started again it would be a very nice story.

Running Backs

Texans- Ryan Moats

Last week Steve Slaton went into the dog house for good as he fumbled once again in the first quarter against the Bills. This was the fifth game that Slaton had lost a fumble this season and head coach Gary Kubiak had seen enough.

After Slaton was benched Ryan Moats got into the game and had a great performance. For the game Moats had 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Moats may not be a starting fantasy football running back right now but fantasy owners should stash him away.

Chiefs- Jamaal Charles

Larry Johnson will be out for at least this week, and we will have to see if he retains his starting job when he comes back. For this week Jamaal Charles isn’t a bad play against the Jaguars’ defense that gave up two long touchdown runs and over 200 rushing yards to Chris Johnson.

Charles is a speedster like Johnson and can take it the distance if he finds a crease.

Raiders- Justin Fargas

While it’s hard to recommend anyone on the Raiders sorry offense for fantasy football, I do believe Justin Fargas has earned a roster spot. Darren McFadden won’t be back with the team for awhile and fellow runner Michael Bush has struggled.

In the past two weeks Fargas hasn’t run that bad and last week he plunged in a touchdown score. If you need a pinch starter, Fargas could be serviceable.

Wide Receivers

Chargers- Malcom Floyd

On Monday the Chargers released veteran wide receiver Chris Chambers and will now move Malcom Floyd into official starting line up. Floyd has been coming on in recent weeks and makes for a solid fantasy pickup.

49ers- Michael Crabtree

I recommended fantasy football owners grab Michael Crabtree up and stash him away last week. This week if you can still get Crabtree on your team, I suggest you nab him up right away.

This kid is the real deal, and he is worth starting in PPR fantasy leagues right now.

Tight Ends

Redskins- Fred Davis

After the Redskins past game against the Eagles it was reported that tight end Chris Cooley would be done for the season. Cooley now is saying that he thinks he might be able to play in a month.

While that may be wishful thinking, I do believe you should pickup Redskins new starting tight end Fred Davis as a replacement. Davis may not be a very good blocker, but he is a solid pass catcher.

Minnesota now has a commanding lead in the division and should steam roll their way to a division title. What the Vikings need to do now is win home field advantage over the undefeated New Orleans Saints.

Below I have some observations from the eighth week of the regular season and how I see those points of interest playing out from a fantasy perspective.

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Eight Notes:

MJD and Chris Johnson Run Wild

Titans star runner Chris Johnson and Jaguars star runner Maurice Jones-Drew both had huge performances in this game.

Johnson totaled 24 carries for 228 yards rushing and the two touchdowns. This was a big game for a running back that had not accomplished much for fantasy owners since his huge game against the Texans week two.

<img style="width: 234px; height: 165px;" title="Jacksonville Jaguars v Tennessee Titans - NASHVILLE, TN - NOVEMBER 01: Maurice Jones-Drew #32 of the Jacksonville Jaguars breaks away from Vincent Fuller #22 of the Tennessee Titans during their game at LP Field on November 1, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Johnson ran his team to their first victory and looks primed to have a big second half of the fantasy football season.

Jones-Drew had 177 yards rushing on only eight carries for the entire game. The two touchdown runs were of distances of 79 yards and 80 yards.

Drew is fast becoming a top three pick for next year’s fantasy football drafts as he is proving he can handle the feature duties in Jacksonville.

The only thing we need to see from Drew now is if he can finish the season strong and hold up physically. If he continues to produce like he did today with only eight carries than he will do just fine.

Donovan McNabb has Great Game

The Eagles pro bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb came out firing as he torched the Giants secondary for three touchdowns on the day.

<img style="width: 234px; height: 158px;" title="New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles - PHILADELPHIA - NOVEMBER 01: DeSean Jackson #10 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates his second quarter touchdown against the New York Giants on November 1, 2009 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both pass catchers are having fabulous seasons and should be started every week.

Another receiver that is coming on of late is rookie Jeremy Maclin. Maclin may not be an every week starter, but he will have games like this week where he posts a big touchdown score.

All these weapons give McNabb the tools he needs to be an explosive fantasy football quarterback for your team.

Look for the Eagles to be the front runners for the division title as they make a strong run for a Super Bowl appearance.

49ers Impress On All Fronts

The 49ers may have dropped their third game in a row, but it is clear to see that this team is much improved over years past.

Quarterback Alex Smith is taking strides to actually becoming the quality quarterback the 49ers drafted him to be.

Smith’s number wouldn’t blow you away, but he did have 199 yards passing and found his favorite target in Vernon Davis for a touchdown.

Michael Crabtree had another strong performance as he totaled six receptions for 81 yards receiving. At this time, Crabtree is worth starting in PPR fantasy football leagues as he is a reception beast.

Frank Gore got things going again with a nice 64-yard touchdown run early in the game. Look for Gore to continue to stay hot as we move ahead as he now seems to be fully healthy from his ankle issue.

The 49ers defense did a great job of applying pressure on Manning for the entire game. Manning was sacked only two times this entire season coming into this game. By games end the 49ers sacked Manning a total of three times and pressured him all day long.

Look for the 49ers to give the Cardinals all they can handle for the NFC Western Division title.

Much has been made of Michael Crabtree and his failure to sign in a timely fashion with the San Francisco 49ers. Some believe he delayed his signing because other teams (like the Jets) were under suspicion of tampering with the young receiver.

Others questioned if this young man had the desire to play at the NFL level.

At the end of the day Crabtree finally signed in October and started in his first game against the Houston Texans.

Impressive First Game

By the end of Crabtree’s first start in the NFL, I was more impressed that he could play the entire game than his stats. Crabtree started the game and played nearly every snap throughout the contest.

Crabtree hasn’t played a football game for almost a year and remember he missed a good amount of time with the foot injury this spring and summer. Not to mention that he didn’t practice with the team during OTA’s, preseason or the first month of the regular season.

For the game, Crabtree had five receptions for 59 yards and flashed his strong hands and route running skills.

After the game 49ers head coach Mike Singletary told Crabtree that all his hard work and study that he put in when he was away from the team, showed on the football field.

This was clearly not the performance of a young player that, “didn’t care” about the game.

Lets See it Again

Now, what fantasy football owners want to see from Crabtree is another good performance against the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday.

Once this young receiver takes the next step and starts becoming the true go to receiver in the offense, he will be a strong fantasy worthy option.

At this point in time, he is worth a waiver wire pickup, but I wouldn’t recommend starting him until he shows more.

From his performance against the Texans, one has to believe that this up to tick in production will come by years end.

The Future Looks Bright

It looks like the 49ers have themselves a super start talent, and they must feel good about holding their ground throughout the negotiations.

As long as Crabtree doesn’t turn into a Terrell Owens type of primadona on the field than they should have a solid player for years to come.

This week was a very interesting one for players on the waiver wire and past players worth picking up. One receiver that everyone was talking about two weeks ago was Cowboys’ receiver Miles Austin.

This week we needed to see if Austin could produce as Tony Romo’s main man. For the game Austin had another fabulous stat line as he totaled over 170 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Austin is a true starter every week and is fast becoming one of the more dangerous fantasy receivers in the 2009 season.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Running Backs

Jets- Shonn Greene- Bye Week Nine

The time has come for Jets’ rookie running back Shonn Greene to be a fantasy football factor. Greene had been a non factor this year until Leon Washington went down with a broken fibula this past weekend.

Greene stepped in against the Raiders and did a heck of a job as he rumbled for 144 yards rushing and two scores.

Since Greene will now be Thomas Jones backup and will play every week you should pick him up in your league.

Cardinals- Chris “Beanie” Wells- Bye Week Four (Done)

Many fantasy football owners that drafted Chris “Beanie” Wells already gave up on him a few weeks ago. This past week Wells started to show why he is the better running back in Arizona with 67 yards rushing and a nice touchdown run.

For the game, Wells had 14 carries as Tim Hightower only had four. Look for Wells to slowly take more of a work load in the Cardinals’ offense.

Wells is at least worth holding onto for the fantasy playoffs in weeks 14 through 16. In those games, he plays the 49ers, Lions and Rams. This young man could do a lot of damage for your fantasy team in those weeks.

Wide Receivers

49ers- Michael Crabtree- Bye Week Six (Done)

I watched the 49ers – Texans’ game this weekend and was blown away by Michael Crabtree’s performance. Sure, he only had five catches for 56 yards, but he played nearly every snap on offense.

It is easy to see why Crabtree was a two time Fred Biletnikoff winner in college as he has a great pair of hands. On one play, he caught the back end of the football. To do something like that only shows that this youngster could be the real deal.

To see that Crabtree could play all the downs and play effectively, speaks volumes about what this kid was doing in his off time.

Crabtree may not be a fantasy starter right away, but he is no doubt worth holding onto.

Vikings- Sidney Rice- Bye Week Nine

I recommended Sidney Rice as a waiver pickup last week, and I’m doing it again. This kid is Brett Favre’s top target and is worth starting on your fantasy team. If you are in need of a receiver than this young man is a good option.

Beyond all the blowout wins this week we actually have a few notable players that broke out in a big way.
In Crabtree’s case, I was amazed to see a rookie receiver come in and not just catch five passes but play almost every snap. Crabtree’s success is a testament to his conditioning and studying when he was on his own.

Below I have some observations from the seventh week of the regular season and how I see those points of interest playing out from a fantasy perspective.

2009 NFL Regular Season Week Seven

Fantasy Football Regular Season Week Seven Notes:

Shonn Greene a Hot Waiver Pickup

This weekend Jets’ rookie running back Shonn Greene saw his fantasy football value sky rocket with Leon Washington breaking his fibula. Washington went down in the game and is already declared done for the rest of the season.

<img style="width: 245px; height: 167px;" title="New York Jets v Oakland Raiders - OAKLAND, CA - OCTOBER 25: Shonn Greene #23 of the New York Jets runs against the Oakland Raiders during an NFL game at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on October 25, 2009 in Oakland, California.

Greene got the opportunity to back up Thomas Jones in this game and didn’t disappoint as he rumbled for 144 yards on 19 carries. Beyond the very impressive yardage numbers from the rookie, he also found the end zone twice.

This running back is a very hot waiver pickup as he will now be active in the Jets’ offense every week.

Austin Goes Wild

For the game Austin had six receptions for 171 yards receiving and two touchdowns. No doubt, Austin is now the true No. 1 receiver on this team and is a scary fantasy football receiver to face.

Look for the Cowboys to continue to make a drive for a wild card spot as they have a good team. This game was a big one for Dallas as they needed to show they could beat a good opponent.

Next week they play the Seahawks at home and should roll to an easy win.

Running Like a Beast

Benson had his revenge on the Bears as he carried the football and amazing 37 times for 189 yards and a touchdown. This was a complete blowout by the Bengals as they crushed the Bears 45 to 10.

<img style="width: 205px; height: 198px;" title="Chicago Bears v Cincinnati Bengals - CINCINNATI - OCTOBER 25: Cedric Benson #32 of the Cincinnati Bengals celebrates after scoring a touchdown during the NFL game against the Chicago Bears at Paul Brown Stadium on October 25, 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Not only did Benson have a great game but quarterback Carson Palmer also had a solid performance as well. On the day Palmer had five touchdown passes as the Bengals had it going from the first quarter to the fourth quarter.

Now, the Bengals are 5-2 and are still a top the AFC Central. After their bye week in week eight they have to play the Ravens and Steelers again.

We will see if they can produce wins against these competitive teams once again this season.

After the first half of this game, it looked like the 49ers were headed to another blow out loss. However, the team fought back and made the game interesting at the end.

Michael Crabtree Plays Entire Game

What may be more impressive than Michael Crabtree’s five catches in his first game is that he played almost every snap on offense. This kid is fantasy worthy right now as he catches everything thrown his way.

It’s almost amazing to see this young receiver play the way he did today given the fact that he has missed so much time.

Look for Crabtree to start for the 49ers for the rest of the season and catch a bunch of passes.

Alex Smith is Back

Head coach Mike Singletary made a change at half time and benched quarterback Shaun Hill in favor of Alex Smith. Smith was the 49ers former first overall pick back in 2005 and got his first chance to play since two years ago.

For the entire second half Smith played strong and threw three touchdowns to tight end Vernon Davis.

In the end, the 49ers lost 24-21 but it looks like Smith will probably be the starter next week against the Colts.

Steve Slaton Scores Twice

Texans top runner Steve Slaton may not be producing in a pretty way this season, but he’s getting the job done. In Slaton’s past four games, he has five touchdowns and seems to be playing better.

I like the way the Texans are using Slaton in the passing game of late, and he did have two touchdowns inside the ten yard line.

Look for Slaton to have another solid game against the Buffalo Bills next week.

Last week we saw the big quarterback like Tom Brady and Drew Brees come out and have big weeks. This week I expect these men to continue their strong play as Brady faces the Buccaneers and Brees goes to play the Dolphins.

Hopefully, if you’re in a head to head fantasy football league you don’t have to face either of these players.

This week we have our weekly section on wounded warriors, as well as our top rankings for top position players. We have the top 16 ranked QB, TE, K and D/ST ranked. We also have the top 30 RB’s and top 35 WR’s as well.

Every week we will start off with our wounded warrior’s section. These are the key players that are on the injury report that you need to pay attention too before games begin.

Wounded Warriors

Quarterbacks

Matthew Stafford Bye Week: There have been rumors in recent days that Matthew Stafford’s season may be overdue to a knee injury. Stafford has come out and said the rumors are just that, and he doesn’t believe his season is over.

IF Stafford should miss more time after the bye, then Daunte Culpepper should continue to start. Last week Culpepper was replaced by Drew Stanton because he tweaked his hamstring.

Running Backs

Adrian Peterson @ Steelers: The Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson injured his ankle in the Vikings’ contest against the Ravens. On Monday, Peterson said that the ankle feels fine, and he will be ready to go for this week.

Frank Gore @ Texans: The 49ers top offensive weapon Frank Gore will be a go this weekend against the Texans. Gore had missed the past two games with an ankle injury he suffered against the Vikings week three.

Look for Gore to carry the offense as they will have Michael Crabtree starting at receiver.

Wide Receivers

Steve Smith vs Bills: The Panthers top receiver Steve Smith limped off the field with a knee injury against the Buccaneers. He did come back and play in the second half but only had one reception for four yards.

Smith is having a very bad start to the season as he does not have a touchdown. Teams are double teaming him and there is no other receiver to help take pressure off him. Hopefully, the knee injury doesn’t linger and effect his speed.

Donnie Avery vs Colts: Donnie Avery injured his hip during the game against the Jaguars. After testing it has been determined that Avery is day to day with his injury.

This is an unfortunate injury as Avery had an early touchdown, and it looked like he might have a big day. Hopefully, he can recover soon.

It’s been a long time coming but Michael Crabtree has finally signed with the San Francisco 49ers. As we all know by now, Crabtree had threatened to hold out for the entire season and go back into next years draft.

In the end, Crabtree came to his senses and realized that the best deal he was going to get was with the 49ers, right now.

Did the Jets Tamper with Michael Crabtree?

I find it interesting that at the same time Crabtree signs with the 49ers, the Jets deal for Braylon Edwards. A few weeks ago the 49ers filed tampering charges against the Jets for contacting Crabtree about a contract.

We will find out more about this situation as the league is looking into this tampering charge.

What I find even more interesting than the Jets trading for Edwards was that they gave up a third and fifth round pick for him.

The 49ers were stripped of, I believe, a third round pick when they tampered with Bears linebacker Lance Briggs.

Maybe the Jets figured they would lose middle round picks so why not trade them away and get Edwards before they lose them anyway.

That is obviously total speculation, but the Edwards trade, at this time, is very interesting none the less.

Michael Crabtree’s Impact on the 49ers Offense

After this weeks game against the Falcons the 49ers have their bye week. This will give Crabtree a couple weeks to get ready for San Francisco’s week seven game against the Texans.

If Crabtree plays in that game he will play in Houston and that means he will be back in his home state of Texas. This is a funny occurrence as he will start his pro career right where he left off in college.

Look for the 49ers to work in different packages for Crabtree. He may only get one or two catches a game but for the 49ers offense that could be a big deal.

Simply put the 49ers offense isn’t all that explosive and any help they can get is welcomed.

In the long run I believe Crabtree will be the 49ers true No.1 receiver and be a good top 20 fantasy football receiver in a few years.
