For all the success, the Cardinals have had on the road this season they have struggled mightily at home. Early in the game the Seahawks took the lead but the Cardinals worked their way back for a home victory.

Chris Beanie Wells Scores Twice

The Cardinals never abandoned the run in this game and this was one of the reason why they won this game. Both Chris Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower continued to split carries this week but Wells was the better runner.

For the game Wells had 16 carries for 85 yards and two touchdown scores. It’s easy to see that Wells is the better runner in this two back set, and eventually he will see close to twenty carries a game.

Another Cardinal player that had a strong game was Anquan Boldin as he had eight catches for 105 yards. This was a nice bounce back game from sitting out a week ago because of his recent ankle injury.

Look for Boldin to have a good second half of the season as he looks healthy for the first time this year.

Both Boldin and Wells should have solid games next week when the Cardinals go to St. Louis to take on the Rams.

Justin Forsett Taking Over

Seattle’s starting tailback Julius Jones left the game early because of a broken rib and Justin Forsett took over. Forsett has played well when given a chance, and today he showed why he’s worth starting in the future.

For the game Forsett had 17 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown score. He also added five catches and twenty six yards in the passing game as well.

Forsett will be a hot waiver wire pickup this week so make sure you target him if you lost a player or two this week.

No one around the NFL will accuse the Arizona Cardinals of winning football games by running the rock. This organization has struggled in the running game for most of its time as a franchise.

The difference between the past two seasons and most of the organization’s history is that they’ve found a way to win without a running game.

Waiting In The Wings

This season the Cardinals are averaging a mere 60 yards rushing per game and that is easily the worst in football.

Starting tail back Tim Hightower has only averaged over 2.8 yards per carry one game this season and has a season long run of seventeen yards.

This anemic running is the same success rate we saw from Hightower a season ago when he averaged 2.8 yards per carry for the entire season.

The other running back in this committee is first round pick Chris “Beanie” Wells and has a 3.9 yards per carry average this season. While Wells has done a good job on the ground he has fumbled the football three times in only 49 carries.

Another short coming in Wells game is that he’s not the strongest of blockers in pass protection. Over time, I expect Wells to improve as he gets more playing time and understands the speed at which an NFL game is played.

I base this solely on the fact that Wells is a physical beast, and once he is positioned correctly to take on a defender, he will be able to handle the physical aspect of the assignment.

Until Wells improves in these areas head coach Ken Whisenhunt will continue to start Hightower over his talented young rookie.

Success In the Running Game Will Come

While Wells may not be the starter on this team right now, he is starting to see more carries than his fellow teammate. Against the New York Giants, Wells carried the football fourteen times to Hightower’s four.

In those fourteen carries Wells accumulated 67 yards and a touchdown. On the touchdown score Wells did a very nice job of bouncing the run to the outside, stiff arming a defender and then turning on the speed to get to the end zone.

This run was telling in the sense that we haven’t seen a running back from Arizona be able to make that play in years. Maybe Thomas Jones or Johnny Johnson but those guys played on very bad Cardinal teams.

Wells has the opportunity to be the first talented young runner to start on a winning Arizona team in a long time. Not to mention playing with a high octane passing game that can score at any moment.

Once Wells gets himself established, he could easily become one of the more productive running backs in Cardinal history. Not to mention one of the more fantasy relevant runners from this organization as well.

Fantasy Football Outlook for Beanie Wells

At this time, if you can acquire Wells off the waiver wire, I would pick him up right away. This talented running back may only be a bye week fill in right now, but he should be a fantasy football starter by seasons end.

During the fantasy football playoff weeks ( weeks 14-16) Wells will face the 49ers, Lions and Rams. If Wells takes over as the starting running back at that time of the year his fantasy numbers could help you win a championship.

This week was a very interesting one for players on the waiver wire and past players worth picking up. One receiver that everyone was talking about two weeks ago was Cowboys’ receiver Miles Austin.

This week we needed to see if Austin could produce as Tony Romo’s main man. For the game Austin had another fabulous stat line as he totaled over 170 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Austin is a true starter every week and is fast becoming one of the more dangerous fantasy receivers in the 2009 season.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Running Backs

Jets- Shonn Greene- Bye Week Nine

The time has come for Jets’ rookie running back Shonn Greene to be a fantasy football factor. Greene had been a non factor this year until Leon Washington went down with a broken fibula this past weekend.

Greene stepped in against the Raiders and did a heck of a job as he rumbled for 144 yards rushing and two scores.

Since Greene will now be Thomas Jones backup and will play every week you should pick him up in your league.

Cardinals- Chris “Beanie” Wells- Bye Week Four (Done)

Many fantasy football owners that drafted Chris “Beanie” Wells already gave up on him a few weeks ago. This past week Wells started to show why he is the better running back in Arizona with 67 yards rushing and a nice touchdown run.

For the game, Wells had 14 carries as Tim Hightower only had four. Look for Wells to slowly take more of a work load in the Cardinals’ offense.

Wells is at least worth holding onto for the fantasy playoffs in weeks 14 through 16. In those games, he plays the 49ers, Lions and Rams. This young man could do a lot of damage for your fantasy team in those weeks.

Wide Receivers

49ers- Michael Crabtree- Bye Week Six (Done)

I watched the 49ers – Texans’ game this weekend and was blown away by Michael Crabtree’s performance. Sure, he only had five catches for 56 yards, but he played nearly every snap on offense.

It is easy to see why Crabtree was a two time Fred Biletnikoff winner in college as he has a great pair of hands. On one play, he caught the back end of the football. To do something like that only shows that this youngster could be the real deal.

To see that Crabtree could play all the downs and play effectively, speaks volumes about what this kid was doing in his off time.

Crabtree may not be a fantasy starter right away, but he is no doubt worth holding onto.

Vikings- Sidney Rice- Bye Week Nine

I recommended Sidney Rice as a waiver pickup last week, and I’m doing it again. This kid is Brett Favre’s top target and is worth starting on your fantasy team. If you are in need of a receiver than this young man is a good option.

This week the Cardinals had to travel to New York and play against the Giants. Arizona has had their share of tough luck on the East coast but this game would be different. The Cardinals won this game with solid defense and good running.

Chris “Beanie” Wells Taking Over?

Rookie running back Chris “Beanie” Wells has had a slow start to his pro career but this week he got it going. In this game, Wells had 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown run and helped his team sustain drives.

Tim Hightower only had four carries on the day, and it now looks like Wells maybe starting to take over as the top runner in Arizona.

If a fantasy football owner got frustrated with Wells early in the season and cut him, you should pick him up.

Hakeem Nicks is Showing his Talent

The Giants first round pick rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks is producing for his team every week, since he returned from injury week four. In this contest Nicks had a 62-yard touchdown catch and finished with 80 total yards.

For a third receiver on the team, he has to be one of the best in all of football.

Nicks may not be a starter for the rest of this season but by next season, he should find a way to get in the starting role over Mario Manningham.

Eli Manning has three very talented receivers going into the future years and is a no doubt top ten fantasy quarterback at next year’s drafts.

The second week of the fantasy football season is now behind us. At this point in time, some of you may be panicking if you have started out slow. Remember, just about every fantasy team will go through slow points in the football season.

Just because players like Steve Slaton, Matt Forte and Roddy White haven’t produced much, it doesn’t mean they will be horrible this season.

Below we have the top players you might want to pay attention to, for waiver pickups. Even if you don’t select a waiver (or have already done so) it’s good to keep these names in mind for the future weeks.

Quarterbacks:

Ravens- Joe Flacco- Bye Week 7

If no one has Joe Flacco in your fantasy league you might consider picking him up. The second year quarterback already has 5 touchdown passes and a 300 yard passing game. Todd Heap, Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason are not awesome targets, but they are good enough to make Flacco a good option.

Bills- Trent Edwards- Bye Week 9

I brought up Trent Edwards last week, and I’m doing it again this week. Edwards has a talented bunch around him. My only question about his production was if his offensive line could hold up. So far, so good as Edwards has produced solid numbers to begin the season.

Unfortunately, the Bills lost their right tackle Brad Butler for the season, hopefully that won’t hurt them going forward.

Running Backs:

Ravens- Willis McGahee- Bye Week 7

This offseason I thought Willis McGahee’s fantasy value was washed up. McGahee had two more operations on his knee and Ray Rice was entrenched as the starting running back. So far, this season McGahee’s knee is holding up fine, and he has four touchdowns already.

Look for McGahee as a nice flex play option and he should produce well. This week he plays the Browns and should have another strong day.

Cardinals- Tim Hightower- Bye Week 4

This week Tim Hightower had another good showing as the Cardinals starting running back. His odds of remaining the starter got a boost as the rookie Chris “Beanie” Wells fumbled the ball twice.

Look for Hightower to continue his solid play and remain the starter for the first half of the season.

Wide Receivers:

Giants- Mario Manningham- Bye Week 10

Mario Manningham is the first of two Giant receivers to discuss in this week’s pickups. Manningham had 58 yards and a touchdown in week one. In week two he had ten receptions for 150 yards and a score.

Manningham has the type of explosion that the Giants sorely need down the field. If he can continue to play like this, he will be a great every week starter in fantasy football.

Giants- Steve Smith- Bye Week 10

It’s time for the other Steve Smith to start getting fantasy love as he had a great performance this week. So far, this season Smith has 16 receptions for 214 yards and a touchdown. Look for Smith to continue his good play.

If Domenik Hixon and Hakeem Nicks miss significant time with their injuries than Smith and Manningham will be fantasy studs.

Colts- Pierre Garcon- Bye Week 6

Pierre Garcon didn’t have anything going until the Colts final offensive play. On that play, he had a very nice 48 yard catch and run touchdown. This was the kind of play that will make Peyton Manning throw his way more often this season.

Garcon and the Colts’ offense were hardly on the field and this would explain the lack of production until the end. Look for Garcon as a decent fill in player as long as he is a starter.

Tight Ends:

Eagles- Brent Celek- Bye Week 4

I’ve been talking about Brent Celek as a fantasy sleeper since May and his producing right off the bat. In week one Celek had a touchdown catch and this past week he had eight receptions for 104 yards.

Look for Celek to continue his solid play no matter who is at quarterback for the Eagles.

Kickers:

Giants- Lawrence Tynes- Bye Week 10

Lawrence Tynes is off to a hot start and the Giants’ offense is looking strong. The Giants will move the ball just about every week and Tynes should continue to receive opportunities.

If you need a kicker going forward, you could do a lot worse than this guy.

Defenses:

Cardinals- Cardinals Defense- Bye Week 4

The Cardinals’ defense has had four sacks in each of their first two games. So far, this season they have done an excellent job against, he run as they are ranked 4th overall against. Look for Arizona to continue its solid play as they are a defense that just continues to play better.

Last week Kurt Warner never looked sharp against the 49ers defense. He was also not helped by the fact that Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston were not healthy. This week the Cardinals went cross country to play the Jaguars.

Warner Plays Well

The Cardinals’ quarterback only threw for 243 yards, but he was on the mark for almost every pass attempt. For the game Warner was 24/26 and had two touchdown passes.

Breaston and Boldin played well as they combined for 13 catches and 152 yards. If these two receivers can stay healthy, the Cardinals’ offense will be strong all year.

Chris Beanie Wells Fumble Twice

Tim Hightower’s grip on the starting tailback job is a little stronger now that Chris Beanie Wells fumbled twice. No head coach likes turnovers and the Cardinals’ head coach has proven he will bench talented players for not performing.

Look for Hightower to be the starter for at least the first half of this season.

Jaguars Struggling

The Jaguars just don’t look like a team that has improved enough to pull out of the AFC South gutter. Maurice Jones-Drew is a talented player but the rest of the team is just not ready to compete for the playoffs.

At this point in time, the Jags need to get Torry Holt more involved in the passing game. So far, they are 0-2, and they could easily be 0-3 next week against the Texans.

Week one of the fantasy football schedule is already behind us. Hopefully, your fantasy team got off to a good start to begin the year.

This week we have our weekly section on wounded warriors, as well as our top rankings for top position players. We have the top 16 ranked QB, TE, K and D/ST ranked. We also have the top 30 RB’s and top 40 WR’s as well.

Every week we will start off with our wounded warrior’s section. These are the key players that are on the injury report that you need to pay attention too before games begin.

Wounded Warrior’s

Donovan McNabb vs Saints – McNabb has missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, so far this week. At this point in time, it looks like he will be a scratch. Even if he can play, the Eagles will probably run the ball and throw short passes.

Matt Cassel vs Raiders- Right now I hope you have a better option than Cassel on your team to start. However, he should make players like Dwayne Bowe more valuable, when he’s on the field.

At this point in time, it looks like Cassel may in fact play, so hopefully we can expect better production from Bowe and Larry Johnson.

Kyle Orton vs Browns- Orton is still wearing padded protection in his injured finger. Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall may suffer a bit, while Orton is recovering. At the same time, all three players should have opportunities for success this week.

LaDainian Tomlinson vs Ravens- Tomlinson has missed practice both days this week. Right now he is wearing a protective boot on his injured ankle. Even if LT does play this week he is a poor bet for production against Baltimore.

If you have other options to start, I would bench Tomlinson this week.

Pierre Thomas vs @ Eagles- Thomas has been practicing with a heavy knee brace and his status for this week is up in the air.

Thomas did say on his twitter that he is ready to go for this week. This is a good sign, but even if he does it will probably be in a limited role.

Antonio Bryant vs @ Bills- Bryant makes for a bad play this week as he is still recovering from knee surgery. Last week he pulled himself out of the game. Look for other options this week.

Anquan Boldin vs @ Jaguars- Boldin said his hamstring is much better than last week, but it is still not 100%. Unless you have a deep receiving core, I would suggest you keep Boldin in the lineup.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh vs @ 49ers- Housh is listed as probable this week with back and rib issues. He should be fine for the game as the Seahawks and 49ers fight for first place in the division.

Brandon Marshall vs Browns- Marshall is not listed on the injury report. This is a good sign, but he will still need some time to get into playing shape. If you have good depth you might consider benching him until he proves he’s back.

Jeremy Shockey vs @ Eagles- Shockey was limited on Thursday’s practice with an ankle issue. However, he is not expected to miss the game and should be a decent start this week.

This one had interesting (for a preseason game) written all over it as the Packers traveled to the Cardinals. In Green Bay’s first two preseason games they have been dominant but both games were at home. This week they were on the road and if they had a dominant game tonight this team would need to be on every fantasy owners radar big time.

Packers Defense Looking Good Early On

I’ve been saying of late that the Packers Defense could have a big year and might be a strong fantasy defense. After tonight I am high on their chances to excel this season.

In the first half of the game corner back Charles Woodson had 2 sacks and 3 forced fumbles as one of them went for a defensive touchdown by Aaron Kampman.

The Packers are using a 3-4 defense this season and their defensive coordinator Dom Capers is one of the better coaches to have if your going to run this defense. In this system you want to keep the opponents offense guessing on where your blitzing pressure is coming from.

Tonight the Packers sure gave the Cardinals Kurt Warner some problems as the offense couldn’t pickup on Woodson blitzing off the edge. No doubt the 49ers ( they also run a 3-4) will take notice of this as they face off against the Cards in the first week of the season.

For the Packers defense, right now they are a top eight fantasy defense and could end up being a top 5 performing defense this season. Look out for the Pack this season as they are strong in every phase of the game.

Chris “Beanie” Wells Plays and Scores Twice

It was nice to see the Cardinals first round pick running back Chris “Beanie” Wells on the field tonight for his first action in the NFL. He didn’t start the game but once he came in he had a nice 20 yard touchdown run and than had a 2 yard touchdown run early in the second half.

Chris may not start over Tim Hightower at the beginning of the season but he should take over as the year moves along.

Aaron Rodgers and Matt Leinart go Pass Happy

It’s time to make Aaron Rodgers a player that is hot on your fantasy radar as he has had three impressive games in a row this preseason. This final performance is the most impressive as he had over 250 yards passing and three touchdowns. Not only did he have a big night but he did it without Greg Jennings on the field most of the time, as Greg left early with a head injury.

Look for Rodgers as a hands down top 5 fantasy quarterback at this years fantasy football draft.

Matt Leinart proved tonight that he is in fact the teams No.2 quarterback and that he should do well if called upon in the regular season. In the second half of the game Leinart was 24 of 38 passing for 360 yards and three touchdowns.

He almost lead the team to a victory as the team opted to go for two at the end but didn’t convert. In the end Matt put to bed all doubts about his abilities to be a productive back up and he should in fact be a solid fantasy start some day when Warner is done playing.

Arizona Cardinals 2009 NFL Regular Season Schedule

At one point I thought the Seattle Seahawks would challenge the Cardinals for the Western Division Title this season but unfortunately Seattle has been it by big injuries again in 2009. If the Seahawks can’t stay healthy the Cardinals may have another cake walk to the Western Title once again.

Most teams that have a terrific fantasy football season and make it to the Super Bowl have hard schedules the next season. But much like the Patriots a season ago the Cardinals will have a very nice schedule to play against coming off their Super Bowl loss.

Unlike the Seahawks, 49ers and Rams who all have great schedules but shaky offenses, this offense actually has the big time players to have a great fantasy season this year.

Games of Interest

Fantasy Playoffs weeks 14 – 16 49ers, Lions, Rams: It’s hard to ask for a better schedule for a team to have in the fantasy football playoffs than the one the Cardinals will have this year. All three of the teams they will face could very well be waiting till next year as they are losing franchises.

Unlike last season when the Cardinals spent their time with the Patriots and Vikings in the fantasy playoffs, this season they have a chance to do some real damage to help you win a fantasy title. Look for Arizona players to be solid producers in your run for a championship as they should win the division with these games.

It will be interesting to see if rookie running back Chris “Beanie” Wells will take over around this time of the season as the Cardinals feature running back. If he does you will most definitely want him on your team just for this stretch run.

2009 Football Projection

My only concern for this team is if they wrap up the Western Title too fast and start resting their players for the playoffs. Going off of memory from last season when the Cardinals won the division early, I can’t remember them resting players very much. If they handle business the same way this year than expect a strong full season from your Arizona players.

One last piece of advice I can give you before you head into your fantasy football draft is make sure you select Matt Leinart as a late round hand cuff to Kurt Warner. If Matt has to take over for a stretch of time he will have a very nice schedule and team around him to thrive.
