Fantasy Player Notes: Kevin Smith suffered a nasty knee injury late in the season and the door is wide open for a new starting tail back in Detroit. Look for Smith to contribute at some point next year, but he will probably need a year before he’s ready to play at his best.

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Kevin Smith gave everything he had to the Lions once again as he continued to fight for yards and showed heart. In the end, he just couldn’t breakthrough for enough success on a bad team to be a weekly fantasy option as the year went on. In the final month of the season Smith tore his ACL against the Ravens and was done for the year.

This injury proved to be a major setback to the second year runner, and he wasn’t in a position to be this teams starter coming into 2010.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: The Lions needed themselves a new running back this year, and they acquired just that in the first round of the draft by selecting Jahvid Best. With Smith in no position to be the teams’ starter it will be Best that should enjoy the feature role with this team.

Smith will help out at times this year, but he’s going to need another year before he can make the best of his career. Some feel Smith may not be the same player upon his return to full health, but we won’t know that for sure until next season. For now Smith is a backup on the Lions and has zero fantasy value early on.
