Taylor Mays
Taylor Mays | Strong Safety
2011 IDP Fantasy Football Outlook: So much for hoping that Taylor Mays would have a shot to develop into an IDP relevant starter this season as not only will he not start for the 49ers, they are looking to likely trade or release him before the start of the season. In the end, I guess the 49ers new coaching staff must not believe he has what it takes to be reliable in pass protection, as they played against him when he played at USC and they were coaches at Stanford.
Here’s hoping Mays lands in new situation that works for him as he needs to continue to develop on the lost time he missed out on because of the lockout. It probably wont’ help his chances to land with this old coach Pete Carroll as he bashed his former coach for not drafting him last spring.
8/2011 Update - Things didn’t workout for Taylor Mays with the 49ers new coaching staff and they traded him away to the Bengals before the third preseason game. At some point Mays might find the field this year, and if so he might make for an interesting look, if he got full playing time. That probably won’t happen unless someone is injured in front of him, as Mays has issues in pass protection.

June 2011
Just look at Pat Chung as a strong safety that saw his playing time go up in his second year and became a regular starting defensive back, to believe that Taylor Mays can do the same thing for your squad. Now, in Mays case, he won’t have a full off-season to work with this new coaches and that could hold him back, but I do believe we will see Mays be a top twenty defensive back by no later than next season.
Mays lost momentum last season, after winning a starting job because he had problems against the pass. Unlike many secondary options in the 49ers backfield, Mays struggles didn’t have to do with the fact that he has no speed, as he has plenty of that. No, Mays was just a rookie trying to get a feel for the pro game and struggled. Now, Mays will have a strong veteran coaching staff to work with, and if he doesn’t win a starting job to begin the season, he should take it as we move deeper into the year.
This is a sleeper worth watching for and if he does win a job, he is worthy of selecting late in your IDP fantasy draft. Mays still makes for a great stash in dynasty leagues as he has the skill set, and situation to be a top ten type of defensive back for years to come.
2010 IDP Fantasy Football Outlook
Maybe the best thing that ever happened to Taylor Mays is that he fell out of the first round and was selected by the 49ers. Coach Mike Singletary has always been a strong leader of character and development, and it’s already rubbing off on Mays in a major way in OTA’s. Mays also had the luxury of having Rod Woodson coming in and work with him and Woodson gave him high praise on NFL Network. Look for the youngster to work his way into the starting lineup at some point this year and will make for a good Big Play IDP player upon his arrival to the starting job.
