IDP Fantasy Football Outlook: David Hawthorne started the 2010 season out slow despite winning a starting job after his outstanding performance in the second half of the 2009 season. Part of the reason for Hawthorne’s slow start was the return of Lofa Tatupu, but when the veteran started to fall off because of injury, Hawthone stepped up and went on another strong run in the second half.
Tatupu has clearly aged beyond his years, and Hawthorne is the top linebacker from the Seahawks to draft this summer, and he makes for a nice value pick. I have a hard time calling a guy, who’s had over 100 tackles each of the past two seasons a sleeper, so I’m not going to call him one. That said, Hawthorne probably won’t get the respect he probably deserves on draft day and you should easily be able to draft him as a third or fourth option at your tackle heavy IDP draft.
8/2011 Update – Lofa Tatupu is gone and Hawthorne is likely to take over the middle for good. Look for Hawthorne as an option you can stash as a No.3 linebacker but is really ready to perform as a No.2 to even No.1 linebacker on your squad. In highly competitive leagues, I would go as far as to nab Hawthorne as a later No.2 linebacker for your squad, as he will produce, so don’t wait too long if you want him on your team.
