IDP Fantasy Football Outlook: The hype train should be on after Cliff Avril signs a new deal this summer, but wise IDP fantasy owners should garner some concern over his true upside. Avril has the talent and situation to justify taking as a high-end DL2, but I recommend you view him more as a low-end DL2 at this point.
Carlos Dunlap could have the same numbers as Avril but will come at a cheaper price in your draft. My big problem with Avril is that he’s tallied a low tackle total in his career, but because he had a monster end to the season, some fantasy owners may jump on him a little early, or auction him too high.
Like so many big-play options, if they’re getting to the quarterback things are good, but when they go through a three or four game slide, it starts to test your patience. Furthermore, if Lawrence Jackson is playing on the other side, not KVB, it’s likely Avril will be the bookend chipped.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
While Cliff Avril is listed as a free agent this off-season the Lions will retain rights to him as he’s only a three year player. Many had Avril as a trendy sleeper for IDP over the past two seasons, and while Avril did have 8.5 sacks, he was banged up and only totaled 33 tackles.
If Avril can stay healthy for a full season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets up to 12 sacks this season, because the Lions have so much fire power on the front line, that Avril should get some cheep chances throughout the season.
The Lions weakness on defense is mainly against the pass, and while they will give up points through the air, they will also make quarterback pay by pounding them into the turf. Avril makes for a decent depth selection in big play leagues, but his tackle deficiency will probably only make him a speculative matchup play in tackle heavy leagues.

2010 IDP Fantasy Football Outlook
Cliff Avril should be set up to improve on his 2009 stats as he now has a much improve talent pole around him on the front line. Now what Avril needs to prove is that he can play throughout a sixteen game schedule and stay healthy. Either way Avril is a player you should consider having for your IDP fantasy football team this season.
