Gerald McCoy | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Defensive Tackle

2011 IDP Fantasy Football Outlook: This should be a breakout season for Gerald McCoy as the Buccaneers are expected to make him solely a 3-technique tackle this year which means he will get 1-gap assignments between guards and tackles and will focus on disruption in the backfield. In the Tampa-2 defense, tackles tend to have a better chance for fantasy purposes and McCoy has the talent to be a regular starter, even in leagues that don’t start the tackle position.

I wouldn’t go crazy and make him a starter to begin the year in those leagues, but he should clearly be a starter in leagues that have tackle position requirements. Look for McCoy’s sack numbers to jump up to around seven this season, but it will be his tackle numbers that will be key if he is to be a stronger option across IDP leagues. That is my concern for McCoy, and currently I have him at 45 for the season, which isn’t bad for a tackle but is average at best for a starting lineman position.

If rookie defensive ends Da’Quan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn make an impact this season, it will help McCoy as opposing offensive lines will need to pay attention to more players on the front line, giving McCoy better opportunities to make big plays when shooting the gap.

2010 IDP Fantasy Football Outlook

The Buccaneers are desperate for their top pick to have a great career and a solid rookie season on the front line. Last season the Bucs were horrible against the run and it will be up to their young tackles to help fix’s the problems from last year. Between Gerald McCoy and the Lions Suh I would expect McCoy to be a better IDP fantasy football option because offenses will test McCoy’s defense against the run more often. McCoy may not be selected at your IDP fantasy football draft but he should be on many IDP rosters by the end of the year.
