It’s amazing but John Kasay (and Brett Favre) have been around since the first year my father, and I started playing fantasy football. In his twentieth season, Kasay is still a decent fantasy option if the Panthers are playing good football.

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: There are only two active players I know of that have been around since the fantasy info guys started playing fantasy football back in 1991. One of those players is Brett Favre (the man is a machine) and the other is John Kasay. To see a kicker last that long isn’t a huge surprise but to see a quarterback play that long and not miss a game is just ridiculous.

Kasay has shown signs over the past couple years that he just isn’t the same reliable fantasy kicker he used to be. In the past two seasons Kasay has missed five of the seven opportunities he’s had from 50 plus. For most of Kasay’s career it seemed you could count on him for at least three conversions from this area but in the past two seasons he’s had one each year.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Because of Kasay’s troubles with the deep ball, the Panthers are expected to bring in a possible kicker to take away opportunities from a distance. This isn’t uncommon with older kickers as they tend to still be good from short range but can’t bang home the deeper opportunities.

If Kasay should have to give up these chances in the season, his fantasy value will almost be a wash as you generally want a kicker that can give you those extra points on the deep kicks.

Should Kasay win the job without a spot man, he might be worth picking up on the waiver wire as Matt Moore should make this offense much better. At this time, I wouldn’t recommend you draft Kasay, unless your league requires you have two kickers.
