Fantasy Football Outlook: A hot pre-season gave way to optimism that Ben Roethlisberger was primed for a career year. While Antonio Brown emerged as a quality No.2 NFL receiver, things didn’t exactly work out as planned for those fantasy owners, hoping Roethlisberger would deliver the goods, even though he set a career high for passing yards.
Injuries seemed to be a big part of the problem for Roethlisberger and with as much wear and tear as he’s had over his career, it’s likely he will continue to miss time. Fantasy owners seem to be attentive to this as his recent ADP ranking has him going as the 14th quarterback off the board.
Still, while Bruce Arians is gone, I expect new offensive coordinator Todd Haley to continue to throw the football, as Rashard Mendenhall may not be back into for the start of the season. Big Ben still has a talented you receiving corps with Mike Wallace as one of the better vertical receivers, and Brown as one of the better route running, third down converting options around.
While Roethliberger may not be a quarterback you want to head into the season with as a starter, he could easily work his way into starting lineups, if the Steelers decide to play an aggressive passing offense.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
No one should blame you if your not a Ben Roethlisberger fan after his actions in recent years. That said, outside of missing the first four games of 2010 due to suspension, Roethlisberger has been a decent option for fantasy football. In the past two seasons, Roethlisberger has averaged at least 266.7 yards passing per game and has a solid touchdown to interception ratio as well.
I feared Roethlisberger would fail to produce at a starting level for fantasy last season mainly because of the loss of Santonio Holmes but the emergence of Mike Wallace kept him on track. With Hines Ward and Heath Miller still commanding respect in the passing game, the deep ball is in play for Wallace and he should continue to flourish this season.
Look to Roethlisberger as a solid final starting quarterback for ten team leagues and a quality backup option that could slip on draft day. Thus far, Big Ben’s ADP on Mock Draft Central is listed as the seventh best quarterback for standard league play. I do believe you will see him slip from that ranking as we move through the summer, but it goes to show you he’s is a worthy starter.

2010 Preview
An angry fan base and an owner that wants a return to basics should stall Ben Roethlisberger in 2010. Since the team didn’t make the playoffs throwing the football last year it is expected that they will return to more of a running attack. Not only would this help the team control the football but Roethlisberger won’t take as many hits.
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Ben Roethlisberger enjoyed his best overall statistical season of his career in 2009 as the Steelers threw the football. While Roethlisberger had success his team missed the playoffs and Pittsburgh’s fan base wasn’t happy.
By January fans and Steelers management was wanting a return to running the football as a way to win games.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: This offseason has been a horrible one for Roethlisberger, and it’s his own fault for most of it. With a horrible lifestyle off the field Steeler fans have turned their backs to him and his management is very upset. It is believed that because of his problems the team made an example out of Santonio Holmes (also had issues) and traded him away for a fifth round pick.
At one point, it even looked like the Steelers might trade Roethlisberger at the draft but that proved to be more rumors to make their star quarterback pay attention to their displeasure. In the end, Roethlisberger was suspended for six games by the Commissioner, but he could only miss four if he’s a good boy.
If Byron Leftwich is successful in Roethlisberger’s absence the team might keep their star player on the bench when he returns to the team. This probably won’t be a bad idea as it’s going to take time before fans are ready to embrace this player again.
For fantasy, Roethlisberger makes for a decent player to stash away as a backup if you have a good every week starter. Quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers have week ten bye weeks and by that time, Roethlisberger should be back on the field.
